The 2017 President's Cup was the fourth President's Cup contested for. The match was played between 2016 League of Ireland Premier Division champions Dundalk and 2016 FAI Cup winners Cork City on 17 February 2017, at Turners Cross. Cork City won the game 3-0, with goals from Seán Maguire, Kevin O'Connor and Karl Sheppard, making Cork City the first team to retain the trophy. This was the second successive match between the sides, and Dundalk's third successive appearance in the competition. The President of Ireland's Cup, also known simply as the President's Cup, is an association football super cup featuring clubs from the Republic of Ireland football league system. It is a one-off match between the winners of the previous season's League of Ireland Premier Division and the FAI Cup, and similarly to the FA Community Shield in England, functions both as a domestic Super cup and a unofficial opener to the football season in Ireland. Dundalk ( ; ga, Dún Dealgan ), meaning "the fort of Dealgan", is the county town (the administrative centre) of County Louth, Ireland. The town is on the Castletown River, which flows into Dundalk Bay on the east coast of Ireland. It is halfway between Dublin and Belfast, close to the border with Northern Ireland. Turners Cross is an all-seater football stadium located in and synonymous with the district of Turners Cross in Cork, Ireland. It is owned by the Munster Football Association (MFA), and is used by the MFA and by League of Ireland side Cork City. It was the first all-seated, all-covered stadium in Ireland following redevelopment in 2009, and it is currently one out of only two, the other being the Aviva Stadium. Anthony Buttimer
Anthony Buttimer (born 13 July 1965) is an Irish FIFA-level soccer referee from Cork. A League of Ireland official, he took charge of the 2008 FAI Cup Final in the RDS, Dublin. Career Buttimer regularly referees matches in the League of Ireland. In the past he has been dispatched to referee local derbies including the Connacht Derby contested between Sligo Rovers and Galway United in August 2007. He was also deployed in the 2013 FAI Cup Semi Final and Louth Derby between Dundalk and Drogheda. In September 2007, Buttimer took issue with the colour of the goalkeeper's jerseys in a game between Dundalk and Shelbourne. It was eventually agreed that the Dundalk goalkeeper would wear a t-shirt with a white strip of tape on the back whilst the Shelbourne goalkeeper would wear a training top for the match. The 2016 League of Ireland Premier Division was the 32nd season of the League of Ireland Premier Division. The league began on 4 March 2016 and concluded on 28 October 2016; the relegation play-offs followed on 31 October and 4 November 2016. 2016 FAI Cup
The 2016 FAI Senior Challenge Cup, also known as the 2016 FAI Irish Daily Mail Senior Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the 96th season of the national Football competition of the Republic of Ireland. The winners of the competition earned a spot in the First qualifying round of the 2017–18 UEFA Europa League. A total of 40 teams competed in the 2016 competition, which commenced in April 2016. The teams entered from the 2016 League of Ireland Premier Division and First Division received byes into the second round stage. Four non-league teams also received byes to the second round. The remaining 12 teams entered at the first round stage. These non league teams are composed of the sixteen clubs which reached the fourth round of the 2015–16 FAI Intermediate Cup, and the semi-finalists of the 2015–16 FAI Junior Cup. Sean Patrick Maguire (born 1 May 1994) is a professional footballer who plays as a striker for Championship club Coventry City. Club career Waterford United Maguire started his career at Waterford United, making his debut in July 2011 against Mervue United. During his career at Waterford he scored 14 goals in 32 games. Karl Sheppard (born 14 February 1991), is an Irish former footballer who played for Galway United, Shamrock Rovers (over two spells), Reading, Accrington Stanley, Cork City and Shelbourne. Club career Academy Sheppard initially played for Portmarnock AFC and Shelbourne before moving to the Everton Academy.
