2017 Northeast Conference Baseball Tournament
The 2017 Northeast Conference baseball tournament began on May 25 and ended on May 28 at Senator Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium in Norwich, Connecticut. The league's top four teams finishers competed in the double elimination tournament. won their fifth championship and claimed the Northeast Conference's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Division I baseball tournament. Entering the event, Central Connecticut Blue Devils baseball, Central Connecticut and Sacred Heart Pioneers baseball, Sacred Heart had won the most tournament championships among current members, while Fairleigh Dickinson Knights baseball, Fairleigh Dickinson and LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds baseball, LIU Brooklyn had never won a championship. Charlie Hickey (coach)
Charlie Hickey (born September 24, 1964) is an American college baseball coach. He has been the head coach of Central Connecticut since the 2000 season, leading the Blue Devils to six NCAA tournaments. Previously, he was the head coach at Providence for three seasons (1997–1999). Providence announced it was cutting the program prior to the 1999 season, but the team won that year's Big East title and advanced to an NCAA Regional final. Coaching career Collegiate summer baseball Before becoming an NCAA head coach, Hickey was an assistant with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League from 1992 to 1994, and head coach of the New England Collegiate Baseball League's Eastern Tides in 1996. The Central Connecticut Blue Devils baseball team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Connecticut, United States. The team is a member of the Northeast Conference, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. Central Connecticut State's first baseball team was fielded in 1935. Norwich, Connecticut
Norwich ( ) (also called "The Rose of New England") is a city in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The Yantic, Shetucket, and Quinebaug Rivers flow into the city and form its harbor, from which the Thames River flows south to Long Island Sound. The population was 40,125 at the 2020 United States Census. History The town of Norwich was founded on the site of what is now Norwichtown in 1659 by settlers from Saybrook Colony led by Major John Mason and James Fitch. They purchased the land "nine miles square" that became Norwich from Mohegan Sachem Uncas. One of the co-founders of Norwich was Thomas Leffingwell who rescued Uncas when surrounded by his Narragansett enemies, and whose son established the Leffingwell Inn. The Northeast Conference (NEC) is a collegiate athletic conference whose schools are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Teams in the NEC compete in Division I for all sports; football competes in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Sacred Heart Pioneers baseball team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, United States. The team is a member of the Northeast Conference, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. Sacred Heart's first baseball team was fielded in 1966. The Pioneers are coached by Pat Egan, who lead his first season as head coach in 2023. The program transitioned to NCAA Division I in 2000, and has appeared in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship four times since the transition. The Fairleigh Dickinson Knights refer to the 17 sports teams representing Fairleigh Dickinson University's Metropolitan campus in Teaneck & Hackensack, New Jersey. The LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds were the athletic teams representing Long Island University's campus in Brooklyn, New York in intercollegiate athletics, including men's and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and track; women's-only bowling, lacrosse, softball, tennis, and volleyball; and men's-only baseball. The Blackbirds competed in NCAA Division I and were members of the Northeast Conference.
