2017 NHL Winter Classic
The 2017 NHL Winter Classic (officially the 2017 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic) was an outdoor regular season National Hockey League (NHL) game, part of the Winter Classic series, played on January 2, 2017. The game featured the St. Louis Blues taking on the Chicago Blackhawks at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri, home of Major League Baseball's Cardinals. The game was announced on March 9, 2016, after news of the matchup had been leaked on February 7 before the details had been finalized, and was one of four outdoor regular season games during the 2016–17 NHL season. Background St. Louis had expressed interest in an outdoor game as early as 2011, with this matchup being their first. 2016–17 Chicago Blackhawks Season
The 2016–17 Chicago Blackhawks season was the 91st season for the National Hockey League, a franchise that was established on September 25 th, 1926. The Blackhawks finished the season with 109 points to win the Central Division and the best record in the Western Conference. As a result, they received the No. 1 seed in the West of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but were swept in the first round by the eventual Stanley Cup runner-up Nashville Predators. Following the playoff loss, general manager Stan Bowman stated that the playoff loss was unacceptable and vowed that changes would be made. Patrick Kane led the Blackhawks in scoring with 89 points and 34 goals. Stadium Series
The Stadium Series is one of the series of regular season outdoor games played in the National Hockey League (NHL). This event is distinct from the NHL's other two series of outdoor games, the NHL Winter Classic and NHL Heritage Classic outdoor games, played on New Year's Day and in Canada, respectively. Games in the Stadium Series have been held in either late January, February, or early March in a football or baseball stadium in the United States. The first Stadium Series was held in 2014 and consisted of seven teams participating in four games held in three venues. California Golden Seals
The California Golden Seals were a professional ice hockey club that competed in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1967 to 1976. Based in Oakland, California, they played their home games at the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum Arena. The Seals were one of six teams added to the league as part of the 1967 NHL expansion. Initially named the California Seals, the team was renamed the Oakland Seals during the 1967–68 season and then the Bay Area Seals in 1970 before becoming the California Golden Seals the same year.
