2017 Mountain West Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2017 Mountain West Conference men's basketball tournament will take place from March 8–11, 2017 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas Valley, Las Vegas, Nevada. The winner, Nevada, receives the conference's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, 2017 NCAA tournament with a 79-71 win over Colorado State. Seeds All 11 conference teams participate in the tournament. The top five seeds receive first round byes. Teams will be seeded by record within the conference, with a tiebreaker system to seed teams with identical conference records. Thomas & Mack Center
The Thomas & Mack Center is a multi-purpose arena located on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Paradise, Nevada. It is home of the UNLV Runnin' Rebels basketball team of the Mountain West Conference. History The facility was first opened in the summer of 1983. The gala grand opening was held on December 16, 1983, featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Diana Ross. The facility hosts numerous events, such as concerts, music festivals, conventions and boxing cards. For ring events, the capacity is 19,522; for basketball, the capacity is 18,000. The facility is named after two prominent Nevada bankers, E. Parry Thomas and Jerome D. Mack, who donated the original funds for the feasibility and land studies. 2016–17 Wyoming Cowboys Basketball Team
The 2016–17 Wyoming Cowboys basketball team represented the University of Wyoming during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Their head coach was Allen Edwards in his first year. They played their home games at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyoming as a member of the Mountain West Conference. They finished the season 23–15, 8–10 in Mountain West play to finish in seventh place. They lost in the first round of the Mountain West tournament to Air Force. Steve Lappas
Stephan Thomas Lappas (born March 18, 1954) is an American former college basketball coach. He coached at Manhattan (1988–1992), Villanova (1992–2001) and UMass (2001–2005), compiling a 280–237 (.542) record over a 17-year coaching career. He is currently a basketball color commentator and studio analyst for CBS Sports Network. Andrew Catalon (born September 7, 1979) is an American sportscaster. He has announced NFL on CBS, PGA Tour on CBS, College Basketball on CBS, NBA on CBS and NCAA March Madness. Robert Leroy Smith (born March 10, 1955) is an American former professional basketball player and coach. College career A 5'11" tall point guard, Smith played college basketball at UNLV, where as a member of the fabled "Hardway Eight", that was coached by the legendary Jerry Tarkanian, and that took UNLV to its first NCAA Final Four, in 1977. His jersey was honored by UNLV in 2022. Professional career Smith was selected by the Denver Nuggets, in the third round of the 1977 NBA Draft, with the 65th overall draft pick. Bob Wenzel (born October 4, 1949) is a former American college basketball coach and broadcaster for the Big Ten Network, ESPN, CBS Sports and Fox Sports. Biography College playing/Coaching career Wenzel graduated from Rutgers University in 1971 with a degree in history, and headed to the University of Utah for his graduate work. In 1973, he earned his master's degree in education from Utah. While at Utah, Wenzel began his coaching career as a graduate assistant. Raymond Bryan Giacoletti (born April 14, 1962) is a retired men's basketball coach, having served as head coach at Drake University, and The University of Utah. He played collegiate basketball at Minot State University in North Dakota from 1980 to 1984, where he was a four-year letterman and a team captain for two seasons. Martin P. "Marty" Fletcher (born March 6, 1951) is an American retired college basketball coach. Coaching for over twenty seasons from the early 1980s to 2004, Fletcher led three different Division I schools while winning two conference regular season and tournament championships while collecting over 250 total wins.
