2017 Isle Of Wight Council Election
The 2017 Isle of Wight Council election took place on 4 May 2017 as part of the 2017 United Kingdom local elections, 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. All 40 Councillors were elected from 39 Wards and electoral divisions of the United Kingdom, electoral divisions, which each returned either one or two Councillors by first-past-the-post voting for a four-year term of office. The result of the election saw the Isle of Wight Conservative Party (UK), Conservatives re-take majority control of the Isle of Wight Council after electing 25 Councillors. The Island Independents, who after the previous election had formed the ruling group dropped to nine. Elsewhere, the Liberal Democrats (UK), Liberal Democrats had a net gain of one, whilst Labour Party (UK), Labour had a net loss of one. Bob Seely
Robert William Henry Seely (born 1 June 1966) is a British Conservative Party politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Isle of Wight since June 2017. He was re-elected at the general election in December 2019 with an increased vote and majority. Seely is a former journalist and soldier. From 1990 to 1995, he worked as a foreign correspondent in the USSR/post-Soviet states. From 2008 to 2017, he served in the British Armed Forces on the Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and ISIS campaigns. Early life and career Seely was born on 1 June 1966 in Marylebone, London. He was educated in North London at Arnold House School and Harrow School, and studied at King's College London. Military Seely served as both an NCO and officer in the UK Armed Forces. As a sergeant in the British Army, he was awarded a Joint Commanders Commendation in 2009 for his tour in Iraq. In a first-past-the-post electoral system (FPTP or FPP), formally called single-member plurality voting (SMP) when used in single-member districts or informally choose-one voting in contrast to ranked voting, or score voting, voters cast their vote for a candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins even if the top candidate gets less than 50%, which can happen when there are more than two popular candidates. The ''Isle of Wight County Press'' is a local, compact newspaper published every Friday on the Isle of Wight. It had an audited circulation of 23,006 copies, compared to a local population of 140,500. The paper saw a drop in circulation of 13,657 between December 2009 and December 2017 (37.25%). In December 2020 the paper published an article saying that sales remained above 15,000 copies. The paper had been owned locally from its foundation until July 2017, when it was taken over by Newsquest Media Group. The ''Isle of Wight County Press'' website was launched in 1999 and features headline articles updated on a daily basis. These will often appear on the website before featuring in the next issue, allowing readers to be updated daily instead of each week. The website also features videos and photo galleries that would not normally be available in a standard issue.
