2017 IIHF World Championship Division I
The 2017 IIHF World Championship Division I was an international ice hockey tournament run by the International Ice Hockey Federation. Group A was contested in Kyiv, Ukraine from 22 to 28 April 2017 and Group B in Belfast, United Kingdom from 23 to 29 April 2017. South Korea and Austria were promoted to the 2018 World Championship. It marked the first time South Korea had earned promotion to the top tier of the World Championship. Bids There were two official bids to host Group A Championships. * Austria * Ukraine ** Kyiv ::Ukraine had never hosted these championships, however, they did host an Olympic Pre-Qualification round in 2012. The proposed arena was the Palace of Sports. The decision on who hosts the tournament was decided on May 20, 2016. The bid from Ukraine gained a majority vote against the Austrian entry. Odyssey (Belfast)
The Odyssey Complex, formerly Odyssey Centre, is a sports and entertainment complex located within the Titanic Quarter in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The complex originated in 1992 and came into fruition in June 1998. It opened in December 2000, with expansions opening in March and May 2001. The complex consists of: a multipurpose arena, science centre and shopping centre. The shopping centre houses a movie theatre and bowling alley, alongside a selection of restaurants. Thomas Raffl (born 19 June 1986) is an Austrian professional ice hockey winger who is currently playing with EC Red Bull Salzburg of the ICE Hockey League (ICEHL). He previously played for Luleå HF of the Swedish Hockey League. He is the older brother of NHL player Michael Raffl. His father Peter Raffl also played ice hockey.
