2017 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 2017 Edmonton municipal election was held Monday, October 16, 2017, to elect a mayor and 12 councillors to the city council, the nine trustees to Edmonton Public Schools, and the seven trustees to the Edmonton Catholic Schools. One incumbent public school trustee had no challenger so was elected by acclamation; for the other eight balloting was conducted. They were all elected to four year terms. All contests were conducted according to the First past the post system. Although FPTP is thought to produce winners who receive a majority of the votes, the winner in seven of the 12 city councillor contests was elected with less than a majority of the votes cast. There was no mechanism used to secure proportional representation of women, labour or minority groups. Edmonton City Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. Tony Caterina
Tony Caterina (born March 28, 1956 in Montagano, Italy) is a Canadian businessman and politician who has served on the Edmonton City Council since 2007. He formerly represented Ward 7 from 2010-2021. In 2021, he ran in the new constituency of O-Day’min however he lost to newcomer Urban Planner Anne Stevenson by over 3,000 votes. Provincially, Tony Caterina ran for election as the Progressive Conservative candidate in the riding of Edmonton-Beverly-Clareview and lost in the May 5, 2015 election to NDP incumbent Deron Bilous. It derives from the ancient Roman word ''acclamatio'', a kind of ritual greeting and expression of approval towards imperial officials in certain social contexts. Ahmed Ali, better known by the pseudonym Knowmadic, is a Somali-Canadian poet, writer, actor, musician, and youth activist. Early life Ali was born November 28, 1984, in Mogadishu, to a nomadic father and a mother whose family were farmers. His name is a portmanteau of ''knowledge'' and ''nomadic''. Mike Nickel
Mike Nickel (born April 27, 1965) is a Canadian politician who served as an Edmonton city councillor from 2004 to 2007, and then again from 2013 to 2021. Early life and education Nickel was born in Edmonton and attended the University of Alberta, earning a bachelor's degree in political science in 1989 and subsequently a master's degree in statistics and media studies. During his time at university, Nickel served as president of the University of Alberta Students' Union from 1985 to 1986 and was active in the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. The Stollery Children's Hospital is a 218 bed children's hospital that opened in October 2001. It is a "hospital within a hospital," being situated within the University of Alberta Hospital and co-located with Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in the Walter C. Fort Nelson, British Columbia
Fort Nelson is a community in northeast British Columbia, Canada, within the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM). It held town status prior to 6 February 2009, when it amalgamated with the former Northern Rockies Regional District to form the NRRM, becoming its administrative centre.
