2017 Chilean Presidential Election
General elections were held in Chile on 19 November 2017, including presidential, parliamentary and regional elections. Voters went to the polls to elect: * A President of the Republic to serve a four-year term. * Twenty three of 43 members of the Senate to serve an eight-year term in the National Congress. * The full 155 members of the Chamber of Deputies to serve a four-year term in the National Congress. * The full 278 members of the regional boards to serve a four-year term. In the presidential election, opposition candidate and former president Sebastián Piñera took a lower than expected 36% of the vote—though nearly 14 points ahead of his closest contender, senator Alejandro Guillier, backed by the sitting administration. Miguel Juan Sebastián Piñera Echenique OMCh (; born 1 December 1949) is a Chilean billionaire businessman and politician who served as president of Chile from 2010 to 2014 and again from 2018 to 2022. Binomial Voting
The binomial system ( es, Sistema binominal) is a voting system that was used in the legislative elections of Chile between 1989 and 2013. From an electoral system point of view, the binomial system is in effect the D'Hondt method with an open list where ''every'' constituency returns ''two'' (hence the name) representatives to the legislative body. The fact that only two candidates are elected in each district results in the peculiarity where the second most supported list is over-represented. Its use was prescribed in the respective constitutional organic law during the Pinochet regime. Manuel José Ossandón Irarrázabal, colloquially "Cote Ossandón", (born Viña del Mar, Región de Valparaíso, 24 August 1962) is an agricultural technician and a senator of Chile for the 8th Senatorial District. He was elected during the parliamentarian elections of 2013, for the period 2014–2022. Member of Chilean center-right party Renovación Nacional (RN). He renounced in July 2016. Ossandón is actually one of the four most popular candidates for the presidential election of Chile in 2017 and was the second most voted senator of Chile during the parliamentarian elections of 2013. Felipe José Kast Sommerhoff (born 9 June 1977) is a Chilean economist, researcher, consultant, and politician. Early life and family Kast is a nephew of far-right politician José Antonio Kast and son of the late economist Miguel Kast, who served as Minister of State and President of the Central Bank under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Amplitude (political Party)
Amplitude was a Chilean classical-liberal political party founded in January 2014. Although initially grouped as centre-right independents that had no militancy in the parties of the Alliance, the party's leanings were later grouped with the "liberal center" and the party was associated with other movements outside the coalition before its dissolution. Independent Democratic Union
The Independent Democratic Union (''Unión Demócrata Independiente'', UDI) is a conservative and right-wing political party in Chile, founded in 1983. Its founder was the lawyer, politician and law professor Jaime Guzmán, a civilian allied with Augusto Pinochet. Guzmán was a senator from 1990 until his murder by communist guerrillas on April 1, 1991. Independent Regionalist Party
The Independent Regionalist Party ( es, Partido Regionalista Independiente, PRI) was a centrist political party in Chile. The party was regionalist ideologically but had a nationwide presence. It was intended to be an alternative to the dominant coalitions in the Chilean electoral system, the New Majority and the Alliance.
