2017 Chiapas Earthquake
The 2017 Chiapas earthquake struck at 23:49 CDT on 7 September (local time; 04:49 on the 8th UTC) in the Gulf of Tehuantepec off the southern coast of Mexico near the state of Chiapas, approximately southwest of Pijijiapan (alternately, south-southwest of Tres Picos), with a Mercalli intensity of IX (''Violent''). The moment magnitude was estimated to be . The earthquake caused all of Mexico City to tremble, prompting people to evacuate after the early warning system was triggered. 1787 New Spain Earthquake
The 1787 New Spain earthquake, also known as the San Sixto earthquake, occurred on 28 March at 11:30 local time (17:30 UTC). It caused a large tsunami that affected the coast of the Puebla Intendancy (includes the current state of Guerrero) and the Oaxaca Intendancy (currently Oaxaca) in Southwestern New Spain (currently part of Mexico). With an estimated magnitude of 8.6 on the moment magnitude scale, it was more powerful than any instrumentally recorded Mexican earthquake. Tonalá is one of the 119 municipalities of Chiapas, in southern Mexico. As of 2010, the municipality had a total population of 84,594, up from 78,438 as of 2005. It covers an area of 1766.2 km². North American Plate
The North American Plate is a tectonic plate covering most of North America, Cuba, the Bahamas, extreme northeastern Asia, and parts of Iceland and the Azores.
