2017 Cambodian Communal Elections
Communal elections ( km, ការបោះឆ្នោតជ្រើសរើសក្រុមប្រឹក្សាឃុំសង្កាត់ អាណត្តិទី៤ ឆ្នាំ២០១៧) were held in Cambodia on Sunday, 4 June 2017. The National Election Committee (NEC) announced that some 7.8 million of 9.6 million eligible Cambodians were registered to cast their ballots. 94,595 candidates from 12 political parties contested the 11,572 commune council seats in 1,646 communes of Cambodia. Voter turnout was a record 90.37%. There were concerns surrounding some irregularities in the polling. The result was a victory for the Cambodian People's Party, albeit with a smaller majority, and saw large gains by the Cambodia National Rescue Party. Ultimately, the strong showing by the opposition led to its dissolve before it could contest the national elections. Communes Of Cambodia
The communes of Cambodia ( ''khum''/ ''sangkat'') are the third-level administrative divisions in Cambodia. They are the subdivisions of the districts and municipalities of Cambodia. Communes can consist of as few as 3 or as many as 30 villages (''phum''), depending on the population. * In 1998 there were a total of 1,609 communes, and 13,406 villages in Cambodia. * However, according to the 2008 census there are now 1,621 communes in Cambodia and 14,073 villages. * As of the 2017 commune elections, the number of communes had risen to 1,646. The Cambodia Daily
''The Cambodia Daily'' is an English and Khmer language news site that writes and aggregates news about Cambodia. It was originally an English-language daily newspaper based in Cambodia from 1993 to 2017, and was considered a newspaper of record for Cambodia. According to the owners, the 2017 closure was the result of a dispute with the Cambodian government over a US$6.3 million tax bill, which was disputed by the newspaper's ownership as politically motivated. The newspaper ceased its daily print newspaper, but still maintains a small online presence, and is no longer located in Cambodia. In 2017, the Cambodian government ordered ISP's to block ''The Cambodia Daily'''s website from within Cambodia. Khmer Power Party
The Khmer Power Party (KPP; km, គណបក្សអំណាចខ្មែរ) is a Cambodian pro-American political party founded on 18 March 2010 by Cambodian American, Cambodian-American Sourn Serey Ratha. It did not officially register until March 2015. The party is in favor of abolishing the monarchy, and establish a second Khmer Republic government. Serey Ratha was charged and put in jail in August 2016 for criticizing the government’s deployment of troops to the Laos border. He than receive a royal pardon a year later But Sophorn refused to restore him as president but will give him a title of honorary president instead. Serey Ratha than threatened to file a complaint against Sophorn for allegedly forging public documents to secure the title of party president. FUNCINPEC
The National United Front for an Independent, Neutral, Peaceful and Cooperative Cambodia,; french: Front uni national pour un Cambodge indépendant, neutre, pacifique et coopératif commonly referred to as FUNCINPEC,, ; is a royalist political party in Cambodia. Founded in 1981 by Norodom Sihanouk, it began as a resistance movement against the People's Republic of Kampuchea (PRK) government.
