2017 Aegean Sea Earthquake
A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck on 21 July 2017, about south southeast of Bodrum, Turkey, at depth of 7.0 km. Two people were killed and more than 120 others were injured on the Greek island of Kos, while at least 360 injuries were reported in Turkey. Earthquake The earthquake's epicentre was located just southwest of the small island of Kara Ada on the northern side of the Gulf of Gökova. The gulf is a result of extensional tectonics related to ongoing subduction of the African Plate beneath the Aegean Sea Plate, and is currently expanding in a north–south direction on a set of west–east trending normal faults. The current opening rate is estimated to be at least 1.1 mm per year. The earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 6.6 on the moment magnitude scale. 2020 Aegean Sea Earthquake
An earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.9–7.0 occurred on 30 October 2020 about northeast of the Greek island of Samos. Although Samos was closest to the epicentre, it was the Turkish city İzmir, northeast that was heavily affected—more than 700 residential and commercial structures were seriously damaged or destroyed. One hundred and seventeen people died in İzmir Province while an additional 1,034 were injured. In Greece, there were two fatalities and 19 injured. The earthquake is the deadliest in the year 2020, and the third major earthquake to strike Turkey that year. It is also the deadliest in Turkey since 2011. The event is called the Samos earthquake by the International Seismological Centre. 2014 Aegean Sea Earthquake
An earthquake occurred in the northern Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey on May 24, 2014. It had a moment magnitude of 6.9 and a maximum Mercalli intensity scale, Mercalli intensity of VIII (''Severe''). Serious damage was reported on the Turkish island of Imbros and the cities of Edirne and Çanakkale, as well as on the Greek island of Lemnos. The earthquake was felt in Bulgaria and southern Romania. Several aftershocks followed the main shock, the strongest measuring 5.3 ML. This aftershock struck the Gulf of Saros at 12:31 local time. Tectonic setting The northern part of the Aegean Sea shows a transition from the strike-slip tectonics associated with the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) to the extensional tectonics that characterise the area north of the Hellenic arc.
