2016–17 Texas Southern Tigers Basketball Team
The 2016–17 Texas Southern Tigers basketball team represented Texas Southern University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Tigers, led by fifth year head coach Mike Davis (basketball coach), Mike Davis, played their home games at the Health and Physical Education Arena in Houston, Texas as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 23–12, 16–2 in SWAC play to win the regular season SWAC championship. They defeated 2016–17 Alabama State Hornets basketball team, Alabama State, 2016–17 Grambling State Tigers men's basketball team, Grambling State, and 2016–17 Alcorn State Braves basketball team, Alcorn State to be champions of the 2017 SWAC men's basketball tournament, SWAC tournament. Mike Davis (basketball Coach)
Michael Davis (born September 15, 1960) is an American basketball coach. He is the head men's basketball coach at the University of Detroit Mercy, a position he has held since 2018. Davis served as the head men's basketball coach at Indiana University Bloomington from 2000 to 2006, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) from 2006 to 2012, and Texas Southern University from 2012 to 2018. Playing career Davis, an Alabama native, spent his collegiate playing career with the University of Alabama Crimson Tide after earning the state's Mr. Basketball honor in 1979. In his first season, he played for the legendary C. M. Newton and then spent his final three years playing under another coaching legend, Wimp Sanderson. He ended his career with a 10.1 points per game average. His 165 steals ranks third all-time at the school.
