2016–17 Saudi First Division was the 40th season of the Saudi First Division since its establishment in 1976. The season started on 11 August 2016 and concluded on 5 May 2017. Teams A total of 16 teams are contesting the league, including 11 sides from the 2015–16 season, two relegated from the 2015–16 Saudi Professional League and three promoted from the 2015–16 Saudi Second Division. Al-Qaisumah were promoted as champions, while Al-Adalh were promoted as Group B winners. Wej secured the final berth by winning the play-offs. Saudi First Division
The First Division League (FDL for short), also called the Yelo league for sponsorship reasons, is the second tier of professional football in Saudi Arabia. The First Division League is ranked below the Saudi Professional League and above the Saudi Second Division in the Saudi Arabian football league system. All of the FDL clubs qualify for the King Cup, the annual Saudi Cup competition. Al-Hazem are the most recent champions, winning their second title during the 2020–21 season. The number of clubs in the league has changed throughout history, most recently in the 2018–19 season, when the number of clubs increased from 16 to 20. The 2015–16 Saudi Professional League (known as the Abdul Latif Jameel Professional League for sponsorship reasons) was the 40th season of the Saudi Professional League, the top Saudi professional league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 1976. The season began on 19 August 2015 and ended on 14 May 2016. Al-Nassr were the two time defending champions having won their seventh title last season. The league was contested by the 12 teams from the 2014–15 season as well as Al-Qadisiyah and Al-Wehda, who joined as the promoted clubs from the 2014–15 First Division. They replace Al-Orobah and Al-Shoulla who were relegated to the 2015–16 First Division. Al-Hofuf ( ar, ٱلْهُفُوف ', also spelled Hofuf or Hufuf, also known as "Al-Hasa", "Al-Ahsa" or "Al-Hassa") is the major urban city in the Al-Ahsa Oasis in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, with a population of 858,395 (as of 2021). Al Batin Football Club ( ar, نادي الباطن لكرة القدم) is a Saudi Arabian professional football club based in Hafar al-Batin, Eastern Province, that competes in the Saudi Professional League. Al Ettifaq Football Club ( ar, نادي الاتفاق لكرة القدم) is a professional football club in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Al-Ettifaq was established after the merging of three clubs in the city of Dammam at the year 1944. Al Ettifaq is the first Saudi team to win an international title – the 1984 Arab Club Champions Cup. Al Ettifaq is also the first team to win the Saudi Premier League without any defeat. Al-Diriyah Club () is a Saudi Arabian football club based in Diriyah. Founded in 1976, the club competes in the MS League , the second tier of Saudi football. Al-Diriyah play their home games at the Prince Turki bin Abdul Aziz Stadium in Riyadh. Al-Diriyah have won the Saudi Second Division once in 2013 and finished as runners-up once in 2020. Al-Riyadh Saudi Club () is a football team based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that is currently playing in the Saudi Second Division (third level). Al Mujazzal Club () is a Saudi Arabian football team based in Al Majma'ah that is currently playing in the Saudi Third Division. Their home stadium is King Salman Sport City Stadium. On 23 April 2016, Al-Mujazzal won its first ever league title winning the 2015–16 Saudi First Division and achieved their first ever promotion to the top flight league.
