2016–17 Iowa State Cyclones Men's Basketball Team
The 2016–17 Iowa State Cyclones men's basketball team represented Iowa State University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Cyclones were coached by Steve Prohm, who was in his second season. They played their home games at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa as members of the Big 12 Conference. They finished the season 24–11, 12–6 in Big 12 play to finish in a three-way tie for second place. In the Big 12 tournament, they defeated Oklahoma State, TCU, and West Virginia to win the tournament championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. As the No. 5 seed in the Midwest region, they defeated Nevada in the First Round before losing to Purdue in the Second Round. Steve Prohm
Steven Marshall Prohm (born July 12, 1974) is an American basketball coach who is in his second tenure as the head coach for Murray State men's basketball. Previously, he was the head coach at Iowa State University, a position he had held from 2015 to 2021. Prohm served in the same capacity at Murray State University from 2011 to 2015. Early life A native of Vienna, Virginia, Prohm's family later moved to Dalton, Georgia, where Prohm attended high school at Northwest Whitfield High School in Tunnel Hill, Georgia and lettered in basketball for three years, graduating in 1992. He started college at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta where he played NCAA Division III basketball. Prohm made it less than halfway through his first season as a player when he left the team to follow his passion for coaching. They finished the season 23–12 10–8 in Big 12 play to finish tied for 5th place. They lost to Oklahoma in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Conference tournament. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament where they defeated Iona and Little Rock to advance to the Sweet Sixteen where they lost to Virginia. Previous season Iowa State finished the season 25–9, 12–6 in Big 12 play to finish in second place. Hallice Cooke
Hallice Cooke ( ; born January 5, 1995) is an American basketball player who last played college basketball for the Nevada Wolf Pack. Early life and high school career Cooke grew up in Union City, New Jersey and played at St. Anthony High School for legendary coach Bob Hurley. His team went 28–2 as a senior and was ranked the 45th best guard in the nation by Rivals.com. He earned MVP honors at the 2013 SNY Invitational after scoring game-high 22 points as St. Anthony won its 81st consecutive game. Cooke played in West Coast All-Star Classic, Mary Kline Classic and Schoolboy Classic in 2013 and played in Sports U AAU program, which is same program as future Cyclone teammate Dustin Hogue. Jameel McKay
Jameel McKay (born September 14, 1992) is an American former professional basketball player. He played two seasons of college basketball for Iowa State Cyclones men's basketball, Iowa State, where as a junior in 2014–15, he was named Big 12 Conference, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year when he averaged 2.4 blocked shots per game. In 2017, he won an List of NBL champions, NBL championship with the Perth Wildcats. College career Indian Hills Community College (2011–2013) After high school, McKay attended Indian Hills Community College for two years, becoming the first player in school history to be named NJCAA First-Team All-American twice. He helped the Warriors go 59–8 during his two years on the team, and played in the national tournament in 2011–12 where he was named to the all-tournament team.
