2016–17 Aston Villa F.C. Season
The 2016–17 season was Aston Villa's first season in the Football League Championship following their relegation from the Premier League last season in their 142nd year in existence. It was also their first season in the second tier of English football since the formation of the Premier League. On 2 June 2016, Roberto Di Matteo was appointed the manager of newly the relegated Championship club, working under the new chairman Tony Xia. Di Matteo's former Chelsea teammate Steve Clarke was appointed as his assistant on the same day. On 3 October 2016, Di Matteo was sacked as manager after a string of poor results culminating in a 2–0 defeat at Preston North End. On 12 October 2016, Steve Bruce was appointed manager. Aston is an area of inner Birmingham, England. Located immediately to the north-east of Central Birmingham, Aston constitutes a ward within the metropolitan authority. James Chester
James Grant Chester (born 23 January 1989) is a professional footballer who plays as a centre-back and is a free agent. Chester began his career with Manchester United but made only one appearance for the club. He had spells on loan at Peterborough United, Plymouth Argyle and Carlisle United before joining Hull City in January 2011 on a permanent contract. He spent three-and-a-half years there before signing for West Bromwich Albion in 2015. After only one year with West Brom, Chester joined Championship club Aston Villa in the summer of 2016. Ross McCormack (born 18 August 1986) is a Scottish professional footballer who most recently played as a striker for Aldershot Town. McCormack started his career with Scottish Premier League club Rangers in 2002, where he made few appearances and was loaned to English League One side Doncaster Rovers in January 2006. Aaron Tshibola (born 2 January 1995) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Hatta. Born in London, he came through the youth ranks at Reading before moving to Aston Villa in 2016. He represented England at U18 level in 2013 but has since been called up by DR Congo and played in a friendly match for the side in March 2018. Stephen Neal Clemence (born 31 March 1978) is an English football coach and former player, who made nearly 250 appearances in the Premier League and Football League playing as a midfielder. Clemence began his career with Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent six years as a professional but never established himself as a regular first-team player. He was capped once for England at under-21 level. He moved on to Birmingham City in 2003, where he was chosen player of the 2006–07 season, at the end of which he signed for Leicester City.
