2016 Zanzibari General Election
General elections were held in Zanzibar on 20 March 2016. The 2016 election was conducted as a re-run of the annulled 2015 Zanzibari general election. Only the Zanzibari President, Zanzibar House of Representatives and local legislative elections were part of the re-run. The election had a seemingly low turnover compared to previous elections as the opposition had boycotted the re-run. The opposition criticize the government in rigging the system against them after the election they believed to be victorious was annulled in 2015. Due to the boycott, Ali Mohamed Shein won the presidency by a landslide and continued his second term. ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib ( ar, عَلِيّ بْن أَبِي طَالِب; 600 – 661 CE) was the last of four Rightly Guided Caliphs to rule Islam (r. 656 – 661) immediately after the death of Muhammad, and he was the first Shia Imam. The issue of his succession caused a major rift between Muslims and divided them into Shia and Sunni groups. Ali was assassinated in the Grand Mosque of Kufa in 661 by the forces of Mu'awiya, who went on to found the Umayyad Caliphate. Elections in Tanzania occur on both the local and national levels. The local government holds elections for street or village chair people. General elections at the national level elect the President and the members of the National Assembly. The president is elected for a five-year term. The National Assembly The National Assembly, or ''Bunge la Jamhuri ya Muungano'', has 323 members: 232 members elected for a five-year term in single-seat constituencies and 75 seats allocated to women who are elected by the political parties that are represented in the National Assembly. Chama cha Ukombozi wa Umma (CHAUMMA) is a political party in Tanzania. Hashim Spunda Rungwe, chairman of CHAUMMA since 2014, was the first politician in the party's history to run for president when he stood in the 2015 Tanzanian general election. Many CHAUMMA members were previously aligned with NCCR-Mageuzi, including Rungwe, who unsuccessfully contested for president as the NCCR-Mageuzi candidate in the 2010 Tanzanian general election. Rungwe states that CHAUMMA's participation in elections depends on whether the dominant political party, CCM, allows an even playing field for opposition parties. The Democratic Party (DP) is a political party in Tanzania. The party was registered on 7 June 2002. The DP is led by Rev. Christopher Mtikila, who is the Reverend of the Full Salvation Church. The DP calls for the dissolution of the Union Government of Tanzania and has openly campaigned for the separation from mainland of the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba from Tanganyika. The DP supports the expulsion of minorities from the mainland. Ali Mohamed Shein
Ali Mohamed Shein (born 13 March 1948) was the 7th President of Zanzibar, from 2010 to 2020. He was previously Vice President of Tanzania from 2001 to 2010. Shein is originally from the island of Pemba, and he is a member of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party. He is a medical doctor by profession. Political career Shein was appointed by the President of Zanzibar to be a Member of the House of Representatives on 29 October 1995. He was then appointed Deputy Minister of Health on 12 November 1995.
