2016 World Masters (darts)
The 2016 Winmau World Masters was a major tournament on the BDO/ WDF calendar for 2016. It took place from 1–4 December at the Lakeside Country Club, which hosted the stage element of the event for the first time. Glen Durrant maintained the men's title whilst Trina Gulliver won her sixth women's World Masters. Men's Seeds Seeding was take place in accordance of the BDO Rankings for end of October 2016. Lakeside Leisure Complex
The Lakeside Leisure Complex is a hotel, conferencing, entertainment and associated leisure complex in Frimley Green in west Surrey. It hosted in January the open/men's and women's BDO World Darts Championship from 1986 to 2019. History The complex was established in 1972, when Bob Potter (born 1928) bought Wharfenden House and the surrounding grounds and lake. He soon doubled the hall to 1,000 seats principally for hosting comedians and musicians, including North American and internationally acclaimed acts. The Lakeside had a fire later that decade and re-opened. During the 25th year of hosting the World Darts Championship, in 2010 the lake had largely iced over by 7 January. That day the body of a man, a hotel guest for the competition week, was found. Landowner-managers, Bob Potter Leisure Limited, were fined £85,000 for health and safety violations. Steve Alker
Steve "Snakeman" Alker (born 14 February 1964) is a Welsh retired professional darts player who competed in British Darts Organisation and Professional Darts Corporation events. Career Alker won the 1998 Welsh Open, beating Colin Monk in the final. He was also a semi-finalist in the 2000 British Open. He played in the 2001 BDO World Darts Championship and 2002 Winmau World Masters but lost in the first round of both tournaments. At the 2005 UK Open, where starting in the preliminary round, he went on to win five matches, including a victory over Kevin Painter before losing to Phil Taylor in the fifth round. Geert De Vos
Geert De Vos (born 6 October 1981) is a Belgian darts player. His nickname is "Foxy". Career In 2012, De Vos qualified for the first time for BDO World Darts Championship; this performance led to a wildcard for the Zuiderduin Masters. During this tournament, he lost his first match against the eventual winner Scott Waites 5–3. During the World Championship, De Vos played Tony West, the eleventh seed. The match was won by De Vos 3–1. In the second round, he lost to eventual champion Christian Kist 2–4. Another remarkable achievement was throwing a nine-darter at the Denmark Open in 2008, a tournament in which he would lose the final against the Polish player Krzysztof Ratajski. Oskar Lukasiak
Oskar Lukasiak (born 27 October 1991) is a Swedish darts player. Career Oskar is the youngest player (age 12) to make a nine-darter on an official tournament, Denmark Open 2004, 29 August 2004 in the Boys Single. He accomplished the feat against PDC player Ron Meulenkamp in the last and deciding leg in last 8. He then won the boys title. The same weekend he beat few of the top players of BDO including Jarkko Komula from Finland and Shaun Greatbatch from England. The same year he got an exemption to play Winmau World Youth Masters at the age of 12 (the minimum age was 13 before the rules changed). He beat Dutch darts player Jonny Nijs in the final 4-1 to become the first Swedish darts player ever to win Winmau World Masters. The Swedish Darts Organisation made Oskar an honorary member. Scott Mitchell (darts Player)
Scott Mitchell (born 5 June 1970) is an English professional darts player who plays in Professional Darts Corporation tournaments. His most notable achievement was winning the 2015 BDO World Darts Championship. Darts career Early career Before he made his mark in the BDO, Mitchell qualified for the 2007 UK Open, winning his first round match 8–4 against Brian Cathcart before losing out in the second round to 2006 Lakeside World champion Jelle Klaasen. Mitchell won the England Classic and Swiss Open in 2009 which helped him qualify for the 2010 BDO World Championship as the 14th seed. Jeff Smith (darts Player)
Jeff Smith (born 6 November 1975) is a Canadian professional darts player who plays in the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. He reached the semi-final of the 2015 BDO World Darts Championship and the final of the 2016 BDO World Darts Championship in the following year where he faced Scott Waites. Career In his first tournament, Smith reached the semi-final of the Canada National Championships in 1996. He won the tournament in 2008 beating Jeff Noble. John O'Shea (darts Player)
John O'Shea (born 24 July 1975) is a professional Irish darts player, who plays in the Professional Darts Corporation events. His most notable achievement is winning the 2019 World Masters, the first Irish player to win a major global tournament in many years. Career O' Shea had his biggest career win to date at the controversial 2019 World Masters, one of three Irish players winning titles at the tournament. Unseeded in the draw, he defeated Neil Duff, Mario Vandenbogaerde and Scott Waites in the final stages. In doing so, he became the first Irish player in the modern era to win a major tournament. Martin Adams
Martin Adams (born 4 June 1956) is an English professional darts player who plays in World Darts Federation (WDF) events. Nicknamed "Wolfie", he is a three-time BDO World Champion and three-time World Masters champion. He represents Cambridgeshire at county darts level and was the captain of England from 1993 to 2013, the longest any player has held that role. From his debut in 1994, Adams made a record 25 consecutive World Championship appearances, before failing to qualify for the first time in 2019. Adams was diagnosed with prostate cancer in April 2016, but by the end of the year he was given the all-clear. As well as playing, he also acts as a regular pundit and commentator for televised coverage of BDO events. Darts career Adams was born in Sutton, Surrey and started his darts career in pubs. Jim Williams (born 27 July 1984) is a Welsh professional darts player who plays in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. Career Williams first ever rose to prominence in October 2012 at the Winmau World Masters in Hull. There he beat four players in the preliminary rounds to reach the main stage, most notably defeating reigning Lakeside World Champion Christian Kist 3–2 in his final match. Once on stage, he beat established campaigners Jan Dekker 3–1 and Ross Montgomery 3–2 to reach the quarter-finals, before losing out to eventual champion Stephen Bunting by 3 sets to 1. Gary Robson (darts Player)
Gary "Big Robbo" Robson (born 19 June 1967) is an English professional darts player who plays in World Darts Federation events. Robson now resides in the small rural village of Rothbury, Northumberland. Career Robson qualified twice for the World Championships, but was beaten in the first round on each occasion. He made it for a third time in 2004, but found himself 2–0 down in sets against Steve Coote. However, Robson recovered and took the match to a sudden death deciding leg, which he won. Bobby George commented that "you won't see browner darts in this tournament than that match". Robson had another excellent performance in losing to 'Silverback' Tony O'Shea in the second round. Robson's biggest tournament win so far was at the World Darts Trophy in Utrecht, Netherlands.
