2016 Virginia Cavaliers Football Team
The 2016 Virginia Cavaliers football team represented the University of Virginia in the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Cavaliers were led by first-year head coach Bronco Mendenhall and played their home games at Scott Stadium. They were members of the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They finished the season 2–10, 1–7 in ACC play to finish in a tie for sixth place in the Coastal Division. Last season The 2015 Cavaliers finished with a record of 4–8, 3–5 in ACC play for the second straight year, to finish in sixth place in the Coastal Division. Bronco Mendenhall
Marc Bronco Clay Mendenhall (born February 21, 1966) is an American football coach who most recently coached at The University of Virginia. He stepped down after the 2021 season. Mendenhall joined Virginia in 2015 after spending the previous eleven seasons as the head football coach at Brigham Young University, and resigned his position following the 2021 season. He has a career record of 135 victories and 81 losses, and has recorded fourteen postseason bowl game appearances with seven victories. Mendenhall is known for his unorthodox methods and "Earned Not Given" motto, even having players earn their jersey numbers each season. In 2019, Mendenhall became the first Virginia coach to bring both the Commonwealth Cup and Jefferson-Eppes Trophy to Charlottesville at the same time, and his Cavaliers also won the South's Oldest Rivalry in the same season. Kelly Poppinga
Kelly Scott Poppinga (born January 31, 1982) is an American football coach and former player. He is the special teams coordinator and defensive coach at the Brigham Young University (BYU). He is the younger brother of National Football League (NFL) linebacker Brady Poppinga. Playing career Poppinga played college football at Utah State University and BYU as a linebacker. He was signed by the Miami Dolphins of the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2008 and also spent time that season with the St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals. Bryce Hall (born November 5, 1997) is an American football cornerback for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Virginia. High school career Playing at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Hall played mostly wide receiver but was also sparingly used in the defensive backfield. Juan Thornhill (born October 19, 1995) is an American football safety for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Virginia. Early years Thornhill attended Altavista High School in Altavista, Virginia. He played safety and quarterback in high school. He committed to the University of Virginia to play college football. Christopher Aziz Peace (born February 8, 1996) is an American football former coach and outside linebacker who is currently a graduate assistant for the Virginia Cavaliers. He played college football at Virginia and in the National Football League (NFL) for the Los Angeles Chargers and New York Giants. Olamide Zaccheaus ( ; born July 23, 1997) is an American football wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). Taquan Mizzell Sr. (born October 21, 1993) is an American gridiron football running back for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL). The Virginia Cavaliers, also known as ''Wahoos'' or ''Hoos'', are the athletic teams representing the University of Virginia, located in Charlottesville. Shaun C. Nua (born May 22, 1981) is a former American football defensive end and current football coach. He played college football at Brigham Young University and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the seventh round of the 2005 NFL Draft.
