Vale, Guernsey
Vale (Guernésiais: ''Lé Vale''; French: ''Le Valle'') is one of the ten parishes of Guernsey in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, Channel Islands. In 933 the islands, formerly under the control of William I, then Duchy of Brittany were annexed by the Duchy of Normandy. Much of the Vale parish belonging to the fief Saint Michael, which benefited the Benedictine monks who lived in an abbey that had been built next to the Vale Church from when it was granted in 1032 by Robert of Normandy who had apparently been caught in a storm and his ship had ended up safe in Guernsey. The rights to the fief were removed by Henry VIII when he undertook the Dissolution of the Monasteries. David Jones (Guernsey Politician)
Dave Jones (1949 – 5 July 2016) was a member of the States of Guernsey and president of the States Trading Supervisory Board. Born in 1949, he was found in a cellar in Golders Green, London with his sister Kathleen. They were both suffering from malnutrition and influenza. David was taken into the care of Barnardo's where he remained until the age of 15 when he started work. He left England as a young man and settled in Guernsey in 1970, worked in the heavy plant industry, and was one of the island's government ministers. Married in 1978, he has two grown children and three grandchildren. He supported Guernsey's self-governance and independence. He was a member of the External Relations Group, supported island-wide voting, parish schools, tougher sentencing for criminal damage, tidal power, and the continuation of the social house-building programme. The States of Guernsey (french: États de Guernesey), sometimes referred to as the Government of Guernsey, is the parliament and government of the British Crown dependency of Guernsey. Some laws and ordinances approved by the States of Guernsey also apply to Alderney and Sark (the other component parts of the Bailiwick of Guernsey) as "Bailiwick-wide legislation" with the consent of the governments of those islands. All enactments of the States of Guernsey apply to Herm as well as Guernsey, since Herm is directly administered by the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The ''Guernsey Press and Star'', more commonly known as the ''Guernsey Press'' is the only daily newspaper published in Guernsey. History The ''Guernsey Evening Press'' was first published in 1897. In 1951 it purchased the struggling ''Guernsey Star'' (first published in 1813), renaming itself ''Guernsey Evening Press and Star''. The paper was published by The Guernsey Press Company until 1999 when the company merged with Guiton, publishers of the ''Jersey Evening Post''. In 2004 Guiton came under the ownership of the Claverlely Group, which also owns the ''Wolverhampton Express and Star'' and the ''Shropshire Star''. On 1 October 2019 it was announced that The Channel Islands Media Group Limited, a local investment company, had purchased the Guernsey Press Company and its wholly owned subsidiary, Guernsey Distribution Limited.
