2016 United States Senate Election In New York
The 2016 United States Senate election in New York was held November 8, 2016, to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the State of New York, concurrently with the presidential election, as well as other elections to the United States Senate in other states and elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections. The primaries took place on June 28. Incumbent Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer won re-election to a fourth term in office. This was considered by many polling aggregate groups to be one of the safest Democratic seats in the nation for this cycle. The prediction turned out to be correct, with Schumer winning around 71% of the vote and all but 5 of the state's 62 counties: Hamilton, Orleans, Wyoming, Allegany and Steuben. The 2016 United States elections were held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Republican nominee Donald Trump defeated Democratic former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the presidential election, while Republicans retained control of Congress. This marked the first and most recent time Republicans won or held unified control of the presidency and Congress since 2004. Trump won his party's nomination after defeating Ted Cruz and several other candidates in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries. With Democratic president Barack Obama term-limited, Clinton defeated Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries. Herkimer County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 60,139. Its county seat is Herkimer. The county was created in 1791 north of the Mohawk River out of part of Montgomery County.
