The 2016 Thurrock Council election took place on 5 May 2016 to elect members of Thurrock Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. The council remained under no overall control. The Labour leader of the council, John Kent, resigned at the subsequent annual meeting of the council. The leader of the Conservative group, Rob Gledhill, was elected leader of the council instead. The 2015 Thurrock Council election took place on 7 May 2015 to elect members of Thurrock Council in England. This was on the same day as the general election and other local elections. 2018 Thurrock Council Election
The 2018 Thurrock Council elections took place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Thurrock Council in England. Councillors in 16 out of the 20 electoral wards were to be up for election. The council remained under no overall control, with a minority Conservative administration running the council. On 26 January 2018, all sitting UKIP councillors resigned from the party and formed a new opposition group called Thurrock Independents. On 13 March 2018, Basildon UKIP announced that they had taken over responsibility for the 6 East Thurrock wards and are now called UKIP Basildon and Thurrock Branch. Before the elections, there was a by-election held in Ockendon which resulted in a Conservative gain after a tie and drawing of lots. Thurrock Council
Thurrock Borough Council, usually known as simply Thurrock Council, is the local authority for the borough of Thurrock in Essex, England. Since 1997, Thurrock has been a unitary authority, combining the functions of a non-metropolitan county with that of a non-metropolitan district. The other such authority in Essex is Southend-on-Sea. It is a member of the East of England Local Government Association. History Poor law union and urban district In 1835, as a result of the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, the parishes that make up the modern borough of Thurrock were united under the Orsett Union, a poor law union. The union was established on 31 October 1935. It was governed by a board of guardians made up of 21 elected representatives, each representing a parish. Most parishes elected one representative, though Grays Thurrock elected two and Orsett elected three. 2016 United Kingdom Local Elections
The 2016 United Kingdom local elections held on Thursday 5 May 2016 were a series of local elections which were held in 124 local councils and also saw 4 mayoral elections in England which also coincided with elections to the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Assembly, the Northern Ireland Assembly, the London Assembly, the London mayoral election and the England and Wales Police and crime commissioners. By-elections for the Westminster seats of Ogmore and Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough were also held. These proved to be David Cameron's last local elections as leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister as he resigned two months later following the defeat of Remain in the referendum on Britain's continuing membership of the European Union which was held seven weeks later. Thurrock Independents
The Thurrock Independents, also known as the Thurrock Independents Party (TIP), are a localist and populist British political party based in Thurrock, Essex, England. It was formed in January 2018 when seventeen Thurrock councillors, including then-East of England MEP Tim Aker, broke-away from the UK Independence Party (UKIP) after claiming to have grown disillusioned with party politics. At its height in 2018, the party was Thurrock Council's official opposition group and had two members in the European Parliament. It has declined after multiple defections and election defeats and now has three Thurrock councillors. Thurrock Council Elections
Thurrock Council is the local authority for the unitary authority of Thurrock in Essex, England. Until 1 April 1998 it was a non-metropolitan district. One third of the council is elected each year, followed by one year without an election. Since the unitary authority was first elected in 1997, the council has consisted of 49 councillors elected from 20 wards.
