__NOTOC__ The 2016 Sunderland City Council election took place on 5 May 2016 to elect one-third of the members of Sunderland City Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections held across the United Kingdom. Election results The election saw Labour gain two seats, taking the Houghton and Copt Hill wards after incumbent Independent councillors chose not to stand for re-election. The Conservatives held the seats they were defending in Fulwell and St Michael's. The Liberal Democrats took a seat from Labour in Millfield. This was on the same day as other local elections, and the 2015 General Election. Background There had been one by-election held in the period since the previous local elections in 2014 which saw Labour hold the Washington East ward in November 2014 following the resignation of their incumbent councillor in October. Election results The election saw Labour gain three seats, increasing the party's majority on the Council. 2018 Sunderland City Council Election
__NOTOC__ The 2018 Sunderland City Council election took place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Sunderland City Council in England. The election took place on the same day as other local elections. Background In the period since the previous local elections in 2016, the Liberal Democrats had won two seats from Labour in by-elections: in January 2017 in Sandhill ward, and February 2018 in Pallion ward. The Labour, Conservative and Green Parties all fielded 25 candidates in the election. The Liberal Democrats fielded 22 candidates, and there were 4 Independent candidates. UKIP did not field any candidates, despite taking 11% of the vote at the previous election. The election saw a debut for the Populist Party and For Britain, fielding one candidate each. Sunderland City Council is the local authority of the City of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear, England. It is a metropolitan district council, one of five in Tyne and Wear and one of 36 in the metropolitan counties of England, and provides the majority of local government services in Sunderland. The 2016 United Kingdom local elections held on Thursday 5 May 2016 were a series of local elections which were held in 124 local councils and also saw 4 mayoral elections in England which also coincided with elections to the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Assembly, the Northern Ireland Assembly, the London Assembly, the London mayoral election and the England and Wales Police and crime commissioners. By-elections for the Westminster seats of Ogmore and Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough were also held. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Fulwell, Sunderland
Fulwell is an affluent area and former civil parish in the City of Sunderland. The parish was abolished in 1928 as a result of the Sunderland Corporation Act 1927, and the area incorporated into the former County Borough of Sunderland. It borders Seaburn, Southwick, Monkwearmouth, and Roker, and the district border between Sunderland and South Tyneside. Fulwell ward, including South Bents and Seaburn, is the least socially deprived of the city's 25 wards. Fulwell has long been an area popular for dining out and social drinking, with a substantial number of restaurants and watering holes in the vicinity, including Alishaan Cafe, the Blue Bell, the Royal Marine, and the Grange Hotel. Millfield, Tyne And Wear
Millfield is a suburb and electoral ward of the City of Sunderland, in Tyne and Wear, England. Most of the buildings in the area were built after the Victorian Era and are mostly built up of large terraced houses built for working-class people of the 20th century. When first built Millfield was located near the heart of Sunderland City Centre, but now has expanded. It now links Pallion with the City Centre. Millfield like Pallion is built very near the bank of the River Wear but then extends to Chester Road (The largest road in Sunderland & Washington). Also located in Millfeild is an Aldi Supermarket and right next to the supermarket is the Millfield Metro station.
