2016 Special Honours
As part of the British honours system, Special Honours are issued at the Queen's pleasure at any given time. The Special Honours refer the award of the Order of the Garter, Order of the Thistle, Order of Merit, Royal Victorian Order and the Order of St John. Life peerages are at times also awarded as special honours. British Honours System
In the United Kingdom and the British Overseas Territories, personal bravery, achievement, or service are rewarded with honours. The honours system consists of three types of award: *Honours are used to recognise merit in terms of achievement and service; *Decorations tend to be used to recognise specific deeds; *Medals are used to recognise service on a particular operation or in a specific theatre, long or valuable service, and good conduct. Appointments to the various orders and awards of other honours are usually published in ''The London Gazette''. Andrew Baker
Sir Andrew William Baker (born 21 December 1965), styled The Hon. Mr Justice Andrew Baker, is a judge of the High Court of England and Wales. He is currently Judge in Charge of the Admiralty Court. Biography He was educated at Lenzie Academy, read mathematics at Merton College, Oxford, and completed a postgraduate diploma in law at City, University of London. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1988. He was made a judge of the High Court of Justice (King's Bench Division) in 2016 and invested a knight in the 2016 Special Honours. He is correctly described as Mr Justice Andrew Baker, distinguishing him from other judges, including Jeremy Baker, with the same surname. Peter Piot
Sir Peter Karel, Baron Piot, (born 17 February 1949) is a Belgian-British microbiologist known for his research into Ebola and AIDS. After helping discover the Ebola virus in 1976 and leading efforts to contain the first-ever recorded Ebola epidemic that same year, Piot became a pioneering researcher into AIDS. He has held key positions in the United Nations and World Health Organization involving AIDS research and management. He has also served as a professor at several universities worldwide. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by King George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, of which bathing (as a symbol of purification) was an element. Knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath".
