2016 New York City Marathon
The 2016 New York City Marathon was the 46th running of the annual marathon race in New York City, United States, which took place on November 6. The elite men's race was won by Eritrea's Ghirmay Ghebreslassie in a time of 2:07:51 hours while Kenya's Mary Jepkosgei Keitany won the women's race in 2:24:26 for a third consecutive victory. In the wheelchair races, Switzerland's Marcel Hug (1:35:49) and American Tatyana McFadden (1:47:43) won the men's and women's races, respectively. The handcycle races were won by Australia's Michael Taylor (1:23:06) and New Zealand's Tiffiney Perry (2:03:58). A total of 48,468 runners finished the race, comprising 29,830 men and 18,638 women. Shadrack Kiptoo Biwott (born February 15, 1985 in Kenya) is a Kenyan-born American long-distance runner. Early life Biwott grew up in Eldoret in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya and moved to the United States in 2002 to attend La Cueva High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. On November 8, 2003, he placed first in the state with a time of 15:23.00 at the New Mexico State Cross Country Championships. College career Biwott graduated from the University of Oregon where he was an multiple time All-American. Education Born in Madison, Wisconsin, Landry attended Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, a state-chartered magnet school in Fairfax County, Virginia. Craig Leon (born November 8, 1984) is an American distance runner who represented the United States in the men's marathon at the 2015 Pan American Games. Running career High school Leon first participated in competitive running at Van Wert High School. At the 2002 OHSAA Boys' Division II state cross country championships, Leon placed 11th overall in the 5K in 16:31. In his senior year cross country season, his best result in the 5K was 16:03. He graduated from Van Wert in 2003. Collegiate Leon attended Ohio University, where he became a walk-on for Ohio's cross country and track teams. Ohio coach Mitch Bentley had told Leon, "You want to walk on? Sure, go ahead". At the 2007 Hillsdale Relays, Leon ran the men's 10,000 meters in 30:06.54. Patrick Smyth (born August 6, 1986) is an American long distance runner from Salt Lake City. He had retired in 2020, but came back to competition in 2023. College career Smyth was a seven-time All-American and three-time Big East Conference champion. While at the University of Notre Dame he set a 10,000-meter school record of 28:25.85 and ranked 11th at the 2008 NCAA Championships in cross-country. He also finished 4th nationally in the 10,000-meter race. International career Smyth competed in the 2010 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. He was also the 2013, 2014, and 2015 XTERRA Triathlon, XTERRA trail running champion.
