2016 MSBL Season
The 2016 MSBL season was the 28th season of the Men's State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 18 March, with round 1 seeing a 2015 grand final rematch between the Joondalup Wolves and South West Slammers. The 2016 MSBL All-Star Game was played on 6 June at Bendat Basketball Centre – the home of basketball in Western Australia. The regular season ended on Saturday 30 July. The finals began on Friday 5 August and ended on Saturday 3 September, when the Cockburn Cougars defeated the Wolves in the MSBL Grand Final. State Basketball League
NBL1 West, formerly the State Basketball League (SBL), is a semi-professional basketball league in Western Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2020, Basketball Western Australia partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to bring NBL1 to Western Australia. NBL1 replaced the former SBL to create more professional pathways and opportunities for males and females playing basketball in Western Australia. As a result, the SBL became the west conference of NBL1. History The State Basketball League originated in 1972 as the District Competition. Lakeside Lightning
Lakeside Lightning is an NBL1 West club based in Perth, Western Australia. The club fields a team in both the Men's and Women's NBL1 West. The club is owned and managed by Lakeside Baptist Church. The Lightning play their home games at Lakeside Recreation Centre. Club history Background The Lakeside Lightning basketball program was established by the Lakeside Baptist Church in 1995 when teams were first entered into the junior state league, the Western Australian Basketball League (WABL). Grand final defeats (2000–2002) The Lakeside Lightning made their debut in the State Basketball League (SBL) in 2000 in the form of a men's team. Tom Jervis
Thomas Lachlan Jervis (born 4 February 1987) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Rockingham Flames of the NBL1 West. He played college basketball for Bevill State Community College and Troy University in the United States before debuting in the National Basketball League (Australia), National Basketball League (NBL). He won two NBL championships with the Perth Wildcats between 2013 and 2016. After two seasons with the Brisbane Bullets, Jervis returned to the Wildcats in 2018 and won his third championship. Matthew Adekponya
Matthew Adekponya (born 9 June 1990) is an Australian-born Ghanaian basketball player and filmmaker. He played in the Queensland Basketball League (QBL) every year between 2009 and 2015, winning QBL championships with the Cairns Marlins (2009) and Mackay Meteors (2015). After two years in the State Basketball League (SBL) in Western Australia, he returned to the QBL in 2018 and then had a stint in the NBL1 North in 2021. Floreat, Western Australia
Floreat is a residential suburb west-northwest of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Julius "Jay" Bowie (born March 25, 1992) is an American professional basketball player who last played for Bali United of the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL). He played college basketball for Marist College before playing professionally in the NBA Development League, Australia and England. High school career Bowie was born in Tampa, Florida. Jacob Holmen
Jacob Ervin Holmen (born August 17, 1991) is an American former professional basketball player. He played four years of college basketball for North Texas, but his time on the court was restricted due to injuries, including his senior year where he sat out the entire second half of the season after sustaining a third concussion in just over a year. Upon turning pro, he played in Australia and Bulgaria, making a name for himself in the State Basketball League (SBL). Benjamin James Ettridge (born 15 April 1974) is an Australian basketball coach. Playing career Ettridge competed in the State Basketball League between 1993 and 2004, playing for the Cockburn Cougars (1993–1994), Willetton Tigers (1995–1996), Mandurah Magic (1997–1999; 2002–2004) and Perth Redbacks (2001). Rhys Vague
Rhys Anthony Vague (born 17 January 1996) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Kagawa Five Arrows of the Japanese B.League. He made his debut for his hometown Perth Wildcats in the NBL as a development player in 2014. After four seasons as a development player, he was elevated to a fully contracted player in 2018. Ben Purser (born 24 February 1990) is an Australian basketball player for the Perry Lakes Hawks of the NBL1 West. He debuted for the Hawks in 2008 in the State Basketball League (SBL) and helped them win an SBL championship in 2018 with grand final MVP honours. Jourdan Kevan Tardieu DeMuynck (born September 29, 1990) is an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball for Chabot College and Prairie View A&M. College career DeMuynck spent three years at Chabot College. Maurice Barrow (born January 15, 1992) is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball for Fairfield University before playing professionally in Austria and Australia. High school career Barrow attended Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, New York. As a junior in 2008–09, he led Christ the King to the CHSAA Class AA intersectional championship by tallying a double double in the decisive game.
