2016 Ivorian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Ivory Coast on 18 December 2016. The new constitution, which was approved in a referendum in October, reduced the term for the 255 members of the National Assembly from five to four years. The presidential coalition, the Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (composed of the Rally of the Republicans, the Democratic Party of Ivory Coast – African Democratic Rally and some minor parties) won more than the half the seats in the National Assembly. Electoral system The 255 members of the National Assembly were elected from 169 single-member constituencies and 36 multi-member constituencies with between two and six seats. Closed List
Closed list describes the variant of party-list systems where voters can effectively only vote for political parties as a whole; thus they have no influence on the party-supplied order in which party candidates are elected. If voters had some influence, that would be called an open list. Closed list systems are still commonly used in party-list proportional representation, and most mixed electoral systems also use closed lists in their party list component. Many countries, however have changed their electoral systems to use open lists to incorporate personalised representation to their proportional systems. Guillaume Kigbafori Soro (born 8 May 1972) is an Ivorian politician who was the Prime Minister of Côte d'Ivoire from April 2007 to March 2012. The People's Socialist Union (french: Union Socialiste du Peuple) is an Côte d'Ivoire, Ivorian political party based in London. History The People's Socialist Union (USP) was founded in 1996. The general secretary of USP was Henri Tohou, who on 19 February 1990, initiated and led a small group of students from Yopougon University (Abidjan). It was the first significant Ivorian students' uprising against President Félix Houphouët-Boigny's regime. Houphouët-Boigny headed one of the most brutal France, French-sponsored dictatorships in Africa.
