2016 Houston Cougars Football Team
The 2016 Houston Cougars football team represented the University of Houston in the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season. It was the 69th year of season play for Houston. They were led by head coach Tom Herman during the regular season and played their home games at TDECU Stadium in Houston. The Houston Cougars football team is a member of the American Athletic Conference in its West Division. They finished the season 9–4, 5–3 in American Athletic play to finish in a tie for third place in the West Division. They were invited to the Las Vegas Bowl where they lost to San Diego State. On November 26, head coach Tom Herman resigned to become the head coach at Texas. He finished at Houston with a two-year record of 22–4. Houston was led by new head coach Major Applewhite in the Las Vegas Bowl. Tom Herman (American Football)
Thomas Herman III (born June 2, 1975) is an American football coach and head coach of the Florida Atlantic Owls. He was the head football coach for the Texas Longhorns at the University of Texas at Austin from 2017 to 2020. Prior to that, he served as the head football coach at the University of Houston from 2015 to 2016. Early life An only child, Herman was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and has family there. From age six he was raised in Simi Valley, California. He earned his B.S. in Business Administration from California Lutheran University in 1997, where he was a Presidential Scholarship recipient and cum laude graduate. Steven Dunbar Jr. (born December 19, 1995) is a professional gridiron football wide receiver for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football at Houston. College career Dunbar started in 38 games for the Houston Cougars and finished his college career with 180 receptions for 2,430 yards and 11 touchdowns. Isaiah Johnson (born December 20, 1995) is an American football cornerback for the DC Defenders of the XFL. He played college football at Houston. Early years Johnson attended James Earl Rudder High School in Bryan, Texas. He committed to the University of Houston to play college football. Marquez Stevenson (born March 26, 1998) is an American football wide receiver who is a free agent. He played college football at Houston. Early years Stevenson attended Northwood High School in Shreveport, Louisiana. He committed to the University of Houston to play college football. College career As a true freshman at Houston in 2016, Stevenson played in two games and did not record a reception but did have 36 receiving yards off a hook-and-ladder play. Ra'Shaad Samples (born December 11, 1994) is an American football coach who is currently the Passing Game Coordinator and Wide Receivers coach at Arizona State University. He previously served as running backs coach for the Los Angeles Rams. A native of Dallas, Texas, he has established himself as one of top college football recruiters of the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Patrick Carr (born September 22, 1995) is an American football running back who is a free agent. Carr signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft. Kyle Allen (born March 8, 1996) is an American football quarterback for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). A native of Scottsdale, Arizona, he played high school football at Desert Mountain and was among the top football players of his class. Gregory Mario Ward Jr. (born July 12, 1995) is an American football wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). 2015 NCAA Division I FBS Football Rankings
Two human polls and a committee's selections comprised the 2015 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) football rankings, in addition to various publications' preseason polls. Unlike most sports, college football's governing body, the NCAA, does not bestow a national championship, instead that title is bestowed by one or more different polling agencies.
