2016 FIBA Intercontinental Cup
The 2016 FIBA Intercontinental Cup was the 26th edition of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup. The game was contested by the 2016 FIBA Americas League champions (the top-tier level of Latin America champions), Guaros de Lara, and the 2015–16 FIBA Europe Cup champions, Fraport Skyliners, who at the time were the 3rd-tier level champions of Europe ( FIBA Europe Cup is currently Europe's 4th-tier level league). The champions of the 2015–16 EuroLeague, who would normally represent Europe in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup ( EuroLeague is the top-tier level European-wide-league), CSKA Moscow, did not participate in the tournament, as a result of the 2015–17 FIBA–Euroleague Basketball controversy. Guaros de Lara is a Venezuelan professional basketball club, that is based in Barquisimeto, Lara, Venezuela. Guaros de Lara BBC has existed as a club in various different forms since 1983. Oļegs Latiševs (born 1 June 1980), occasionally referred to by his native Russian name Oleg Latyshev ( rus, Олег Латышев), is a Latvian FIBA basketball referee. His cooperation with FIBA started in 2003 and with Euroleague in 2007. Latisevs started to work as a referee already at the age of 15 (1995), when he was awarded the referee licence and was invited as a referee to the Championship of Latvian Youth Basketball League. Markel Starks (born February 21, 1991) is an American professional basketball for Darüşşafaka of the Turkish Basketbol Süper Ligi (BSL). Born in Accokeek, Maryland, he played for Georgetown Prep before enrolling at Georgetown University and playing for the Hoyas. Shavon O'Day Shields (born June 5, 1994) is an American-Danish professional basketball player for Olimpia Milano of the Italian Lega Basket Serie A (LBA) and the EuroLeague.
