2016 Chicago Red Stars Season
The 2016 Chicago Red Stars season was the eighth season of the soccer club and its fourth season in National Women's Soccer League. After a banner 2015 season, the team expected to do well again. The club ended the regular season at third place, and played the play-off semi-final at Boyds, Maryland against Washington Spirit on September 30, falling 2–1 and did not reach the championship match. This season the Red Stars returned to Toyota Park for its home games, where it last played on a regular basis during its 2010 season in Women's Professional Soccer league. In 2016 season, the Red Stars honored the retirements of several long time members; Michelle Lomnicki, Julianne Sitch, Jackie Santacaterina, and Lori Chalupny. The jersey number 17 worn by Chalupny, a 3-year captain, an Olympic gold medalist and a FIFA world champion was retired in honor of her accomplishments. Chicago Red Stars
The Chicago Red Stars are a professional women's soccer club based in Bridgeview, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. A founding member of the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) league, they have played in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) since 2013. WPS was the NWSL's predecessor as the professional women's soccer league in the United States, and the Red Stars played in the WPS in 2009 and 2010. After leaving the WPS in December 2010 due to the league's financial issues, the club joined the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) for the 2011 season. In 2012, the Red Stars co-founded and played in Women's Premier Soccer League Elite (WPSL-E): a one-year league which bridged the WPS and the NWSL. Julianne Sitch
Julianne Marie Sitch (born September 18, 1983) is an American former professional soccer defender. She is currently a coach for the Chicago Red Stars and head coach of the University of Chicago men's soccer team. In 2022, she became the first woman in NCAA history to lead a men’s team to a national championship. Early life Born and raised in Oswego, Illinois, Sitch attended Oswego High School and played for the Region II Olympic Development Program. DePaul University Sitch attended DePaul University where she set career records in goals, assists, and points. In 2005, she ended her DePaul career as the program's all-time leading scorer with 32 goals and 26 assists. Alyssa Mautz
Alyssa Lee Mautz (born July 29, 1989) is an American former professional soccer forward and midfielder. She played from 2013 to 2022 for the Chicago Red Stars of the NWSL, and played on loan to Australian club Perth Glory for the 2018–19 W-League season. She previously played for Sky Blue FC in Women's Professional Soccer (WPS), Zorky in the Russian Women's Football Championship and has represented the United States at the U-23 level. She retired from Chicago in 2022 to accept a job as an assistance coach at Texas A&M University. Arin Gilliland
Arin Hadley Wright (born Arin Hadley Walton Gilliland; December 25, 1992) is an American soccer player who currently plays for the Chicago Red Stars in the National Women's Soccer League. Wright was also recently loaned to Australian club Newcastle Jets for the 2018–19 W-League season. Gilliland played her collegiate soccer for Kentucky Wildcats. On January 16, 2015, the Chicago Red Stars selected Gilliland as the eighth overall pick in the 2015 NWSL College Draft. College In 2014, while at Kentucky, Gilliland was awarded the Honda Inspiration Award which is given to a collegiate athlete "who has overcome hardship and was able to return to play at the collegiate level". Jen Hoy
Jennifer Rose Hoy (born January 18, 1991) is an American former professional soccer forward. She played for Chicago Red Stars and Sky Blue FC of the NWSL. Early life Raised in Sellersville, Pennsylvania, Hoy attended Germantown Academy where she finished her high school career with 110 goals and 46 assists. She scored 36 goals during her senior year. Hoy was voted three-time league MVP and was named by the Philadelphia Inquirer as Player of the Year the same year. Hoy also earned all-league and all-state honors as a track athlete. She was also a gymnast for eight years before choosing soccer as her primary sport. Hoy played for club team, FC Bucks Vipers, and helped the team win state cups for six seasons. Alyssa Naeher
Alyssa Michele Naeher (born April 20, 1988) is an American soccer goalkeeper for the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) and the United States national team. She was on the 23-player roster for the United States at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup and was the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. She has also played for the Boston Breakers and Turbine Potsdam. With the Breakers, she won the 2014 NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year award. Perth Glory Football Club is an Australian professional soccer club based in Perth, Western Australia. It competes in the country's premier women's competition, A-League Women.
