Andy Murray defeated John Isner in the final, 6–3, 6–7(4–7), 6–4 to win the singles tennis title at the 2016 Paris Masters. By reaching the final, Murray secured the world No. 1 ranking for the first time in his career. Novak Djokovic was the three-time defending champion, but lost to Marin Čilić in the quarterfinals. As a result of Roger Federer's withdrawal from the tournament, he fell outside of the top 10 in the ATP rankings for the first time since 13 May 2002. Sir Andrew Barron Murray (born 15 May 1987) is a British professional tennis player from Scotland. Richard Gabriel Cyr Gasquet (; born 18 June 1986) is a French professional tennis player. His career-high ATP singles ranking is world No. 7, attained on 9 July 2007. He has won a total of 15 singles titles on the ATP Tour. Martin Kližan (; born 11 July 1989) is a Slovak former professional tennis player. The winner of the 2006 French Open boys' singles title, Kližan turned pro in 2007 and had a career-high singles ranking of world No. 24, achieved on 27 April 2015, and world No. 73 in doubles, achieved on 4 May 2015. His height of 211 cm (6 ft 11 in) makes him the joint tallest ranked tennis player in history, along with Reilly Opelka. He has won eight ATP singles titles between 2007 and 2016. Dušan Lajović ( sr-cyrl, Душан Лајовић; born 30 June 1990) is a Serbian professional tennis player. Lajović has won one singles and two doubles titles on the ATP Tour. On 29 April 2019, Lajović reached his career-high singles ranking of world No. 23. On 21 September 2020, he peaked at No. 82 in the doubles rankings. He is a two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist and the most successful male tennis player in the history of his country.
