The 2015–16 Cuban National Series was the 55th season of the league. Ciego de Ávila defeated Pinar del Río in the series' final round. This was the first time a reigning champion had retained their title in eight seasons. Cuban National Series
The Cuban National Series (, SNB) is the primary domestic professional baseball competition in Cuba. Formed after the dissolution of the Cuban League in the wake of the Cuban Revolution, the Series is a part of the Cuban baseball league system. League structure Since 1993, the league has had 16 teams: one representing each province, and one for the city of Havana. Each team is made up of players from the province it represents. In Havana, most of the top tier players take the field for Industriales, traditionally the strongest team in the league. Other typically strong teams include those from Santiago de Cuba, Pinar del Río and Villa Clara. The 96-game regular season stretches from early August until late January, split into two halves – the fall period stretches from August to early October and the winter period from late October to early January the following year, and culminates with a six team postseason tournament in January to decide the league champion. Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each, taking turns batting and fielding. The game occurs over the course of several plays, with each play generally beginning when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball that a player on the batting team, called the batter, tries to hit with a bat. Cocodrilos De Matanzas
Cocodrilos de Matanzas (English: Matanzas Crocodiles) are a baseball team in the Cuban National Series. Based in Matanzas Province, the ''Cocodrilos'' were formed after the dissolution of Henequeneros and Citricultores, two teams from Matanzas. The Cocodrilos have struggled to enjoy the success of their predecessors. Tigres De Ciego De Ávila
Tigres de Ciego de Avila (English: Ciego de Avila Tigers) is a baseball team in the Cuban National Series. Based in Ciego de Ávila Province, the Tigres have spent most of its history in the bottom reaches of the standings. However, in recent seasons, the team has turned their fortunes around, making it to the 2011 Series Nacional final (losing to Pinar del Rio in six games). The following season, the Tigres bounded back to the finals again, this time winning their first ever Series Nacional over perennial favourites Industriales in six games. The Tigres have continued their run of form since, winning back-to-back championships in 2015 and 2016. Ciego de Ávila placed two players, Roger Machado and Maikel Folch, on the Cuba national team for the 2006 World Baseball Classic. Vegueros De Pinar Del Río
Vegueros de Pinar del Río (English: Pinar del Río Meadow Growers) is a baseball team in the Cuban National Series. Based in the western city of Pinar del Río, the ''Vegueros'' are historically one of the more successful teams in the Cuban National Series, winning championships in 1997, 1998, 2011, 2015. History Prior to the 1992-93 Cuban National Series, two teams competed in the province of Pinar del Río: Forestales (also known as Pinar del Río during some seasons) and Vegueros. Vegueros was a bona fide powerhouse, winning the championship in 1978, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988. A 1992–1993 contraction of the league, in which eight teams were eliminated, caused Vegueros and Forestales to be combined into a single team. In 2015, Pinar del Río won the Caribbean Series, becoming the first Cuban winner since 1960.
