2015 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship
The 2015 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship was the 115th staging of the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Waterford County Board in 1887. The championship began on 8 May 2015 and ended on 18 October 2015. Ballygunner were the defending champions. Affane Cappoquin entered as a promoted team from the intermediate championship. On 18 October 2015, Ballygunner won the championship following a 0-16 to 0-12 defeat of Tallow in the final. This was their 14th championship title, their second in succession. Lismore were relegated following a 1-18 to 1-12 defeat by De La Salle. Ballygunner GAA
Ballygunner GAA (nicknamed "The Gunners") is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club located in the parish of St Mary's Ballygunner in Waterford City, Ireland. The are the current All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship title holders. The club, which is exclusively concerned with hurling, is one of the most successful in Waterford. It has won 20 county titles and produced many great players for Waterford such as Paul Flynn, Fergal Hartley, Billy O'Sullivan and Pauric Mahony. Ballygunner has an intense rivalry with fellow city club Mount Sion and for many years in the 1990s and 2000s the two dominated the club scene. Since 1992, Ballygunner have won 17 county titles. The Munster Senior title was first won in 2001 with a victory over Cork side Blackrock (2-14 to 0-12). A second crown came in 2018, and a third in 2021–22. Abbeyside GAA
Abbeyside () is a townland in Dungarvan in County Waterford, Ireland. It lies on the east bank of the Colligan River. History MacGrath's Castle was a notable landmark in Abbeyside, overlooking Dungarvan Harbour, until it collapsed in January 1916. It was situated at Friar's Walk in Abbeyside, near the Augustinian abbey. It was a six-storey tower house, reputedly built by the MacGrath family, and labelled MacCragh's Castle in the Civil Survey of 1654. While, as of the mid-18th century, it was still in a "good state of preservation", by the mid-20th century only fragments of the walls remained. These were subsequently removed, and no remnants of the castle remain visible above ground. Sport The local GAA club is Abbeyside/Ballinacourty GAA. Walsh Park
Walsh Park ( ga, Páirc Breathnach) is a GAA stadium in Waterford, Ireland named after Willie Walsh, a well-known referee and long time campaigner for Gaelic games in Waterford. It is one of the two homes of the Waterford Gaelic football and hurling teams, the other being Fraher Field in Dungarvan. The two grounds are rivals for important games, former Waterford hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald saying "There's this endless battle between Walsh Park and Fraher Field, a political battle almost. If one field gets a game, the other has to get the next one. Dungarvan was a nice field, but my personal preference was always Walsh Park, because I felt it had more of the feel of a fortress." Fraher Field
Fraher Field ( ga, Páirc Uí Fhearachair) is a GAA stadium, located in Dungarvan, County Waterford, owned by the Waterford GAA County Board. It has a total capacity of around 15,000. History Dan Fraher (1852–1929), an Irish language activist and scholar and promoter of Gaelic games, leased the land in 1885 and bought it outright in 1912. The stadium was renamed in his honour in 1995. With the obvious exception of Croke Park, Fraher Field has been the venue for more all-Ireland senior hurling finals than any other venue, having hosted the 1903, 1905, 1907 and 1911 deciders. Various improvements have been made to the stadium since 1995, including the addition of a new stand on one side of the pitch, and the improvement of standing facilities in general. Roanmore GAA (Irish Language, Irish: ) is a GAA club in Waterford City, Republic of Ireland. Formed in 1970, the club made rapid progress, achieving Senior Hurling status in 1980. The club's greatest achievement was winning back to back Waterford Senior Hurling Championships in 1989 and 1990. Mount Sion ( ga, Cnoc Sion) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Waterford City, County Waterford, Ireland. It was founded by teachers in the school of the same name. Although technically separate from the school, the club still maintains a close relationship with the school, sharing the same sports facilities in the city. The club fields teams in both the Waterford Hurling and Gaelic football championships and has had many famous players, including John Keane, Philly Grimes, Tony Browne and Ken McGrath. The club is mainly concerned with the game of hurling and is the most successful in Waterford with 35 county title wins, although they did win 5 county football titles back in the 1950s. Passage GAA is a Hurling Club with Club Grounds the East Waterford village of Passage East with Players representing the Club from nearby areas of Dunmore East, Cheekpoint, Woodstown, Faithlegg, Ballymacaw and environs. Ballyduff Upper GAA Club is a GAA club based in the west County Waterford village of Ballyduff, Republic of Ireland. The club has won the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship three times, in 1982, 1987 and most recently in 2007. While mainly a hurling club, the club has had some success in Gaelic football, winning the Waterford Senior Football Championship in 1924. Denis Walsh (born 22 January 1965 in Ballynoe, County Cork) is an Irish hurling manager and former dual player of Gaelic games. He is a former manager of the Cork senior hurling team. An effective dual player, Walsh had a successful playing career at club level with St Catherine's and Kildorrery and at inter-county level with Cork. He was a key member of both the Cork football and hurling teams throughout the 1980s and 1990s, winning All-Ireland, Munster and National League titles in both codes. After some relatively unsuccessful spells as manager of various club sides, Walsh took charge of the Waterford senior football team in 2001. He left after two unsuccessful seasons. Walsh emerged as a surprise contender for the vacant managerial position with the Cork senior hurling team and was duly appointed in March 2009.
