2015 South Kivu Earthquake
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the Democratic Republic of the Congo north northeast of Kabare Territory, Kabare, South Kivu on August 7 at a depth of . Impact One policeman was killed by a falling wall in Bukavu, and two children were killed by a house fire caused by the quake. Several houses collapsed and people were also injured in neighboring Rwanda. The moment magnitude scale (MMS; denoted explicitly with or Mw, and generally implied with use of a single M for magnitude) is a measure of an earthquake's magnitude ("size" or strength) based on its seismic moment. South Kivu (''Jimbo la Kivu Kusini'' in Swahili), (french: Sud-Kivu) is one of 26 provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its capital is Bukavu. Bukavu is a city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), lying at the extreme south-western edge of Lake Kivu, west of Cyangugu in Rwanda, and separated from it by the outlet of the Ruzizi River.
