2014 Yobe State Attacks
In November 2014, two separate terrorist attacks took place in Potiskum in Yobe State, Nigeria. Both incidents involved suicide bombers, killing at least 61 people and injuring scores of others. In both cases, Boko Haram have been accused of carrying out the attacks. Attack on Shias On 3 November 2014, a suicide bomber killed at least 15 people in an attack on Shia Muslims who were marching to mark the Day of Ashura. Around fifty people were injured in the attack, and five others were shot by security forces. School attack On 10 November 2014, at least 46 people were killed and 79 wounded, in a suicide bombing Potiskum, Yobe State, Nigeria. The attack took place when students assembled in the hall of the Government Science Secondary School. The bomber entered the school wearing a school uniform. Islamist Insurgency In Nigeria
The Boko Haram insurgency began in July 2009, when the militant Islamist and jihadist rebel group Boko Haram started an armed rebellion against the government of Nigeria. The conflict is taking place within the context of long-standing issues of religious violence between Nigeria's Muslim and Christian communities, and the insurgents' ultimate aim is to establish an Islamic state in the region. Boko Haram's initial uprising failed, and its leader Mohammed Yusuf was killed by the Nigerian government. He began the group in the year 2002, with a view of opposing western education with his followers. He was arrested at his parent's inlaws house by the Nigerian Military and subsequently handed over to the Nigerian police. Potiskum is the largest city in Yobe State and originally the town has about three major tribes which include a Ngizim, bolawa and kara-kare. Yobe is a state located in northeastern Nigeria. A mainly agricultural state, it was created on 27 August 1991. Yobe State was carved out of Borno State. The capital of Yobe State is Damaturu; and it's largest and most populated city is Potiskum. Yobe State School Shooting
On 6 July 2013, Boko Haram gunmen attacked the Government Secondary School in the village of Mamudo, Yobe State, Nigeria, killing at least 42 people. Most of the dead were students, with some staff members also killed.
