2014 WNBA Playoffs
The 2014 WNBA playoffs was the postseason for the 2014 WNBA season. Four teams from each of the league's two conferences qualified for the playoffs, seeded 1 to 4 in a tournament bracket, with the two opening rounds in a best-of-three format, and the final in a best-of-five format. The Phoenix Mercury won the 2014 WNBA Finals, sweeping the Chicago Sky in three games. The Mercury defeated the Los Angeles Sparks in the conference semifinals before defeating the Minnesota Lynx in the Western Conference Finals. The Mercury lost only one game in the entire playoffs. Cinderella (sports)
In sports, the terms Cinderella, "Cinderella story", and Cinderella team are used to refer to situations in which competitors achieve far greater success than would reasonably have been best expected. Cinderella stories tend to gain much media and fan attention as they move closer to the tournament final game. The term comes from the well-known European folk tale of '' Cinderella'', which embodies a myth-element of unjust oppression and triumphant reward, when the title character's life of poverty is suddenly changed to one of remarkable fortune. In a sporting context the term has been used at least since 1939, but came into widespread usage in 1950, when the Disney movie was released that year, and in reference to City College of New York, the unexpected winners of the NCAA Men's Basketball championship also that year. Sancho Lyttle (born September 20, 1983) is a Vincentian-Spanish former professional basketball player for the WNBA. Combining the WNBA and the European season, she has won six domestic leagues and four Euroleague titles with four teams in three countries. She was born in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and was granted Spanish nationality in June 2010. With the Spanish basketball team she has won four medals between 2010 and 2017. Sylvia Shaqueria Fowles (born October 6, 1985) is an American former professional basketball player. Fowles played for the Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx during her career in the WNBA. Angel Lajuane McCoughtry (born September 10, 1986) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Minnesota Lynx of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. Elena Delle Donne (born September 5, 1989) is an American professional basketball player for the Washington Mystics of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The 2014 WNBA season will be the 18th season for the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women's National Basketball Association. Ownership Change At the end of 2013, the Sparks' previous ownership group announced it was ceasing operation and transferring the team to the WNBA. The league, led by commissioner Laurel Richie, began to search for a new owner. The owners of the Golden State Warriors expressed interest in purchasing the team and moving it to the San Francisco area, but ultimately the team was sold to Guggenheim Partners, which also owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, ensuring the Sparks would remain in Los Angeles. 2014 San Antonio Stars Season
The San Antonio Stars were a professional basketball team based in San Antonio, playing in the Western Conference in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The team was founded in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the Utah Starzz before the league's inaugural 1997 season began; then moved to San Antonio before the 2003 season and became the San Antonio Silver Stars, then simply the San Antonio Stars in 2014. The 2014 WNBA season is the 9th season for the Chicago Sky of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Coming off the franchise's first ever playoff appearance, the Sky looked to continue their success in the 2014 season. The Sky's offseason included trading Swin Cash to Atlanta, signing free agent forward Jessica Breland, center Sasha Goodlett, but also learning that center Sylvia Fowles would be missing some time due to Arthroscopic surgery of the hip to repair a torn Labrum and Impingement. Although the Sky finished the season with a 15–19 record, they placed 4th in the Eastern Conference and qualified for the playoffs.
