2014 VCU Rams Baseball Team
The 2014 VCU Rams baseball team will be the 44th season of the university fielding a varsity baseball program, and will represent Virginia Commonwealth University in the 2014 NCAA Division I baseball season. It will be the Rams' second season playing in the Atlantic 10 Conference. It will be the third season of Shawn Stiffler as head coach for the program. Shawn Stiffler
Shawn Stiffler (born April 2, 1979) is an American baseball coach and former pitcher, now serving as head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball, Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He played college baseball for the George Mason Patriots baseball, George Mason Patriots from 1998 to 2001 for head coach Bill Brown (baseball coach), Bill Brown. Stiffler had been a part of the Rams baseball program since 2007, where he spent the first 5 seasons as an assistant to Paul Keyes. Playing career Stiffler played high school baseball from 1994–1997 at Somerset Area High School, in Somerset, Pennsylvania where he earned All-American honors as a pitcher. He was drafted in the 53rd round by the Minnesota Twins in the 1997 MLB Draft, but elected instead to continue his baseball career at the collegiate level, joining the George Mason Patriots baseball team. Bryson Field At Boshamer Stadium
Cary C. Boshamer Stadium is a baseball stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It is the home of the North Carolina Tar Heels baseball team. History The previous home of the Tar Heels was a multi-use venue called Emerson Field, which sat some 2,400 people. The combination baseball/football field was opened in 1916 on the site of the existing athletic field (ca. 1900) and named for a university benefactor, Captain Isaac E. Emerson, best known as the inventor of Bromo-Seltzer. The football team left Emerson for Kenan Memorial Stadium in 1927. Emerson would continue as the home of the baseball team for another 45 seasons. Its site is now occupied by Davis Library. Boshamer Stadium first opened on March 21, 1972, near the tail end of the 1972 season. It is named for Cary C. Boshamer (class of 1917), a textile industrialist from Gastonia whose donation made the new stadium possible. Davenport Field
Davenport Field at Disharoon Park is a baseball stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia. It is the home field of the University of Virginia Cavaliers college baseball team. The stadium has a capacity of 5,074 and opened in 2002. The field is named after former Virginia Student Aid Foundation executive director Ted Davenport, and the stadium is named after Les and Ann Disharoon. Opening Day On February 16, 2002, the University of Virginia baseball program defeated the Bucknell Bison 10-3 in the first ever contest played at the brand new UVA Baseball Stadium. War Memorial Stadium (Hampton)
War Memorial Stadium is a stadium in Hampton, Virginia. It is primarily used for baseball and has been the home of the various incarnations of the Peninsula Pilots, including the current Coastal Plain League incarnation. It is also the home for the Apprentice School Builders college baseball team. The ballpark has a capacity of 3,750 people and opened in June, 1948. Peninsula War Memorial Stadium was designed by the legendary Branch Rickey as an affiliate for his Brooklyn Dodgers. The Newport News Dodgers won 3 Piedmont League Championships before Brooklyn moved to Los Angeles and the Dodgers were no more in 1958. Gray–Minor Stadium is a 1,400-seat facility home to the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Keydets baseball team in Lexington, Virginia. It is named after Elmon T. Gray and Gil Minor, graduates of VMI in 1946 and 1963, respectively. History Before the construction of Gray–Minor Stadium, Patchin Field was the home of VMI baseball. Nicknamed "The Patch", VMI played there up until the end of the 2006 season. Then, in the off-season of 2006, construction would begin for Gray-Minor. It was five years after the field was renovated, but Patchin Field would serve VMI baseball for another trio of seasons.
