Gold Coast Aquatic Centre
The Gold Coast Aquatic Centre (also known as the Optus Aquatic Centre for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games) is a public swimming pool complex located in the Southport Broadwater Parklands on the Gold Coast, Queensland. It was the swimming and diving facility for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. History The ''Gold Coast Aquatic Centre'' opened in the 1960s as the ''Southport Pool''. The complex was renamed to the ''Gold Coast Aquatic Centre'' in the late 2000s. In 2018, the Gold Coast hosted the Commonwealth Games. The ''Gold Coast Aquatic Centre'' was the swimming and diving facility for the event. Approximately $40 million was spent on redeveloping the complex. The redevelopment included the construction of an additional 10-lane competition pool, additional change rooms and new meeting rooms. Matthew Abood (born 28 June 1986 in Sydney) is a freestyle swimmer from Australia. He won the bronze medal with the Australian swimming team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro as well as the gold medal at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai. Abood won the 50m national title in the 2009 Australian Swimming Championships beating the then reigning world record holder Eamon Sullivan. He regained the 50m national title at the 2011 Australian Swimming Championships and won gold in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay at the World Championships. Timothy Phillips (born November 30, 1990) is an American competition swimmer. He swam for the Ohio State Buckeyes, earning numerous All-Big Ten and All-America honors. Swimming career At the 2010 FINA Short Course World Championships in Dubai, Phillips placed 21st in the 50 m butterfly with a time of 23.47 in qualifying and 14th in the 100 m butterfly with a semifinal time of 51.50. At the 2011 Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, Phillips earned the first international medal of his career, a gold, in the 50 m butterfly. On the same day of his 50 m butterfly gold, Phillips then competed in the 4x100 m freestyle relay with Jimmy Feigen, Kohlton Norys, and Robert Savulich. He competed in freestyle and medley events, and won a gold medal as a member of the winning U.S. 4×200-meter freestyle relay team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. In total, he has won seventeen medals in major international competitions: nine gold, six silver, and two bronze spanning the Summer Olympics, the FINA World Championships, the Pan Pacific Championships, and the Pan American Games.
