An election of the delegation from Latvia to the European Parliament was held on 24 May 2014. Background At the previous European Parliament election in Latvia in 2009, the country elected 8 MEPs. Upon entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty Latvia was awarded 1 additional MEP, again bringing the total number of MEPs representing Latvia to 9. Calculated from the results of the 2009 election, this MEP came from the Civic Union. For this election however, the number of MEP's representing Latvia was again reduced to 8. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. The Parliament is composed of 705 members (MEPs). It represents the second-largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India), with an electorate of 375 million eligible voters in 2009. For Latvia's Development ( lv, Latvijas attīstībai, abbr. LA) is a liberal political party in Latvia. It is positioned on the centre-right on the political spectrum. History The party was founded in 2013 by the former Prime Minister of Latvia Einars Repše. Internationally the party is a full member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party, a grouping of centrist and liberal parties from across Europe, since April 2013. The Latvian Association of Regions or Latvian Regional Alliance ( lv, Latvijas Reģionu apvienība, LRA) is a centrist political party in Latvia. It was founded as an alliance on 13 March 2014 and is headed by former Unity MP Edvards Smiltēns. History The alliance won 8 seats in the Saeima at the 2014 parliamentary election. It contested the elections as a political alliance of several smaller regionalist parties, including the , the LSDSP, the Christian Democratic Union and the . Alexander Tomasovich Mirsky (russian: Александр Томасович Мирский, lv, Aleksandrs Mirskis; born 20 March 1964) is a Latvian politician of Russian and Jewish descent. Biography Mirsky was born in Vilnius. In 1986 he graduated in civil engineering from the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute. He worked as a building project leader from 1986 to 1989 and from 1990 to 1992, taking a one year break for service in the Soviet Army as commander of a radiation reconnaissance unit. Upon ending his service, with the rank of first lieutenant, he resumed his work in construction. In 1992, Mirsky was made a technical director and seven years later became the general manager of a construction company. He retired from business to become an adviser to the mayor of Riga Gundars Bojārs from 2001 until 2005, later being elected to the Saeima, the Latvian parliament 2006 until 2009. The Latvian Russian Union (LRU, lv, Latvijas Krievu savienība, russian: Русский союз Латвии, Russkiy soyuz Latvii) (LKS) is a political party in Latvia supported mainly by ethnic Russians and other Russian-speaking minorities.
