European Fencing Championships
The European Fencing Championships is an annual top-level European fencing competition organized by the European Fencing Confederation. History The first competition bearing the name of "European Fencing Championships" was held in Paris in 1921. The International Fencing Federation (FIE) comprised only European federations at the time, with the exception of the United States. In 1936, on the 25th anniversary of the FIE and at the request of the Italian federation, the FIE congress decided to open the European Championships to all countries and granted retroactive recognition of the European Championships as World Championships. After 1937 the FIE focused on the organisation of the World Fencing Championships. Demand for European Championships appeared at the 1979 congress, but it was rejected on the ground that they would either belittle the World Championships or offer a poor fencing level. Vincent Simon (fencer)
Vincent Simon (born 9 April 1990) is a French foil fencer, team European and team World champion in 2014. Career Simon took up fencing at the age of seven and trained at UJB Escrime in Saint-Dizier under Jérôme Roussat, Charles Roselet and Sylvain Privé. He joined in 2007 the centre for promising young fencers in Châtenay-Malabry and won a team bronze medal at the 2008 Junior World Championships in Acireale. He took part in the 2013 Summer Universiade, reaching the quarter-finals in the individual event and taking a bronze medal with the team. He made his breakthrough in the 2013–14 season, reaching the quarter-finals at the La Coruña Grand Prix, the Havana Grand Prix and the Tokyo World Cup. José Luis Abajo
José Luis Abajo Gómez (born 22 June 1978) is a Spanish épée fencer. Abajo won the silver medal in the épée team event at the 2006 World Fencing Championships after losing against France in the final. He accomplished this with his teammates Ignacio Canto, Juan Castañeda and Eduardo Sepulveda Puerto. He won the bronze medal in the Épée competition at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, defeating Hungarian Gábor Boczkó. Being this the first Olympic medal won by Spain in fencing, and becoming the Olympic medal number 100 (99 according to the IOC) in the history of Spain, regarding Winter and Summer Olympics. Yulen Pereira (born 12 July 1995) is a Spanish épée fencer, silver team medallist in the 2014 European Fencing Championships. Career Pereira is the son of Manuel Pereira, Spain's only World champion in épée. He began playing with plastic and foam swords at home when he was four before taking up fencing proper. His first major medal was a bronze in the 2011 Cadets European Championships in Klagenfurt. In the 2012–13 season he won a bronze medal in the Junior European Championships in Budapest and a silver medal in the Junior World Championships in Poreč. These results caused him to be selected into the senior national team along with José Luis Abajo, Pau Roselló, and Elías Casado. His first senior competition was the Senior World Championships in Budapest. Dmitry Vasilyevich Rigin (russian: Дмитрий Васильевич Ригин; born 10 April 1985) is a Russian foil fencer, team bronze medal in the 2011 and 2014 European Fencing Championships. Career He was called into the national team for the European Championships in Sheffield. Russia saw off Israel, but were stopped by France in the semifinal.
