2014 Canon Media Awards
The 2014 Canon Media Awards were hosted by the New Zealand Newspaper Publishers' Association on Friday 9 May 2014 at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland, New Zealand. The Newspaper of the Year was '' The Dominion Post'', and the Reporter of the Year was Andrea Vance of Fairfax Media's political bureau. In August 2014, there were calls for the withdrawal of the Canon Media Award for Best Blog presented to Cameron Slater at the 2014 Canon Media Awards due to allegations of the recipient's involvement in political impropriety as published that same month in the book ''Dirty Politics''. The Newspaper Publishers' Association did not withdraw the award, and released a statement that allegations presented in ''Dirty Politics'' did not constitute sufficient evidence or proof of wrongdoing. Most outlets are foreign-owned; media conglomerates like NZME, Stuff, MediaWorks, Discovery and Sky dominate the media landscape. Nicky Hager
Nicky Hager (born 1958) is a New Zealand investigative journalist. He has produced seven books since 1996, covering topics such as intelligence networks, environmental issues and politics. He is one of two New Zealand members of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. Early life Hager was born in Levin to a middle-class "socially aware" family. His father was from Vienna, Austria, a clothing manufacturer who emigrated to New Zealand as a refugee from the Nazis. His mother was born in Zanzibar (part of Tanzania), where her father studied tropical medicine, and later grew up in Kenya and Uganda. His surname ''Hager'' is pronounced Har-gar, rhyming with ''lager''. Hager studied physics at Victoria University of Wellington, where he also did an honours degree in philosophy. The ''Bay of Plenty Times'' is the regional daily paper for the Bay of Plenty area, including Tauranga, in the North Island of New Zealand. History The ''Bay of Plenty Times'' was first produced on 4 September 1872 as a bi-weekly publication. It consisted of four tabloid-sized pages and cost three pence per issue. The founder and editor was WB Langbridge. Ownership of the newspaper changed many times over the next 40 years, including several times through mortgagee sales. Despite these hardships the ''Times'' issued a Christmas supplement in 1897 which featured one of the earliest use of photographs in New Zealand newspapers.
