2014 Australian Federal Budget
The 2014 Australian federal budget was the federal budget to fund government services and operations for the 2014/15 financial year. The 2014 budget was the first delivered by the Abbott Government, since the Coalition's victory in the 2013 Australian federal election. Treasurer Joe Hockey presented the budget to the House of Representatives on 13 May 2014. The budget featured significant changes to address a perceived deficit crisis. This included a proposed dramatic downsizing of government bureaucracy, and contained significant changes to welfare, new initiatives for a medical research fund and spending on roads. A budget surplus exceeding 1% of GDP was not expected until 2023. WestConnex
WestConnex is a predominantly underground motorway scheme in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. As of 2022, it is partially completed and partially still under construction. A joint project of the New South Wales and Australian governments, the motorway scheme is creating around of new tunnels between Homebush and Kingsgrove, passing underneath Inner West suburbs including Haberfield and St Peters. The first of the tunnels, the M4 East, opened to traffic in July 2019. The second of the tunnels, the M8 Motorway, opened to traffic a year later in July 2020. The rest of the tunnels are expected to open to traffic in 2023. The forecast cost of WestConnex has grown from 10 billion to over $16.8 billion. National Rental Affordability Scheme
The National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) is an Australian Government initiative to stimulate the supply of new affordable rental dwellings. The Scheme offers annual incentives for ten years (indexed annually to the rental component of the CPI). The two key elements of the incentive are: *A Commonwealth Government Incentive currently of $8,335.75 per dwelling per year as a refundable tax offset or payment ; and *A State or Territory Government Incentive currently of $2,778.58 per dwelling per year in direct or in kind financial support. The Incentive is provided annually for ten years and is indexed based upon the rental component of the CPI index. The most recent increase was 0.6%. Work For The Dole
Work for the Dole is an Australian Government program that is a form of workfare, or work-based welfare. It was first permanently enacted in 1998, having been trialled in 1997. It is one means by which job seekers can satisfy the "mutual obligation requirements" to receive the Newstart Allowance, now replaced by the JobSeeker Payment. Other "mutual obligation" measures can include: accredited study, part-time work, Australian Army Reserves, and volunteer work. Under the Howard Government, the scheme was compulsory and targeted the long-term unemployed. Shortly after the Rudd Government was formed it became voluntary. From 1 July 2015, Work for the Dole became effectively compulsory for the majority of Newstart Allowance recipients. Austrade
The Australian Trade and Investment Commission, or Austrade ( ), is the Australian Government's trade, investment and education promotion agency which was also given responsibility for tourism policy, programs and research from 2013. Fuel Taxes In Australia
The main fuel tax in Australia is an excise tax, to which Goods and Services Tax ("GST") is added. Both taxes are levied by the federal government. In Australia the GST (currently 10%) is applied on top of the fuel excise tax. In some cases, businesses may be entitled to exemptions or rebates for fuel excise tax, including tax credits and certain excise-free fuel sources. The "double dipping" (GST imposed on the excise tax) was fully compensated for by lowering the excise at the time the GST was introduced in 2001. While the excise stopped being indexed for inflation in 2001, indexation was reintroduced in 2014 (see History below). The tax collected is added to general revenue. From April 1 to October 1, the fuel excise was lowered or cut by 50% by the federal budget 2022 to 22.1c per litre for all fuels.
