2014 Antiguan General Election
General elections were held in Antigua and Barbuda on 12 June 2014. The result was a victory for the opposition Antigua Labour Party led by Gaston Browne, which won 14 of the 17 seats. Following the election, Browne became the country's youngest Prime Minister. Background After a long delay due to a pending Court order about a boundary change which would have affected the parliamentary seats, on 15 May 2014 the Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer set the election day. House Of Representatives (Antigua And Barbuda)
The House of Representatives of Antigua and Barbuda is the lower chamber of the country's bicameral parliament. The current House of Representatives has a total of 19 members. 17 members are directly elected to five-year terms from single member constituencies using the first-past-the-post system. There is one '' ex officio'' member (the Attorney-general) and the remaining seat is held by the Speaker. Barbuda People's Movement
The Barbuda People's Movement is a centre-left Barbudan nationalist political party in Antigua and Barbuda. Elections in Antigua and Barbuda take place in the framework of a parliamentary democracy. Electoral system The country's electoral law was passed on 31 October 1975 and was last amended in 2002. Elections are overseen by the Office of the Supervisor of Elections and an Electoral Commission, which was established in 2002. Harold Earl Edmund Lovell (born September 27, 1955) is a politician from Antigua and Barbuda. He was the Minister of Finance, the Economy and Public Administration. He was also the minister of tourism and civil aviation. He was the Foreign Minister of Antigua and Barbuda from August 2004 to January 2005, when Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer took over those posts in a cabinet reshuffle, giving Lovell his current posts. Trevor Myke Walker is a Barbudan politician and former Cabinet Minister under the Baldwin Spencer administration. Early life Walker was educated at the Holy Trinity School in Barbuda, that was destroyed in the 2017 Hurricane Irma, but reopened in 2019. The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) is a political party in Antigua and Barbuda. The current leader of the party is Gaston Browne, who serves as the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. The party had previously been led by Lester Bird, who was chairman of the party since 1971, and became Prime Minister and political leader in 1994. The party was founded as the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) by Lester's father, V.C. Bird. The ABLP has traditionally largely been seen as the political arm of the Bird family.
