2013–14 European Challenge Cup Pool Stage
The 2013–14 Amlin Challenge Cup pool stage will be the opening stage of the 18th season of the European Challenge Cup, the second-tier competition for European rugby union clubs. The opening round of matches will be on 10–13 October 2013 and the closing round on 16–19 January 2014. Twenty teams will participate in this phase of the competition; they are divided into five pools of four teams each, with each team playing the others home and away. Competition points are earned using the standard bonus point system. The pool winners advance to the knockout stage, where they will be joined by three entrants from the Heineken Cup pool stage. The quarter-finalists will then participate in a knockout tournament that ultimately ends with the final at the Arms Park in Cardiff on Friday 23 May 2014. 2013–14 European Challenge Cup
The 2013–14 Amlin Challenge Cup was the 18th and final season of the European Challenge Cup, Europe's second tier club rugby union competition. A total of 23 teams participated: 20 in the pool stage, plus three teams parachuting into the knockout stages from the Heineken Cup. The original 20 teams represented six countries. The pool stage began on 10 October 2013 and ran until 19 January 2014, followed by the knockout stages. The final was originally to be held in France in May 2014, however the Federation Française de Rugby subsequently announced that they had withdrawn their application to host due to uncertainty over the availability of Stade de France. Lusitanos XV
Lusitanos XV are a Portuguese professional rugby union representative team based in Lisbon which was created in September 2013 to compete in the 2013–14 European Challenge Cup. It was announced by the Rugby governing body ERC on 2 September that the Portuguese team would hold their home games at Estádio Nacional. However, all their home games were played at the Portuguese national rugby teams home stadium of Estádio Universitário de Lisboa. The team was coached by national team coach Frederico Sousa. In 2021 the team entered the Rugby Europe Super Cup, representing Portugal in an eight-team pan-European competition for clubs from non- Six Nations countries. Salford City Stadium (referred to as the AJ Bell Stadium for sponsorship purposes) is a rugby stadium in Barton-upon-Irwell, England, built to replace Salford rugby league club's ground the Willows for the 2012 season. Sale Sharks rugby union club have also played at the stadium since the 2012–13 season. Development and financing In 2005, Salford City Council approved plans for the Reds to move from the Willows to the brownfield site at Barton. The stadium was originally to be developed by Red City Developments, with construction to be complete for the start of the 2009 season. However, RCD went into administration in July 2008. Salford City Council formed a joint venture company with Peel Group to develop and deliver the £16 million stadium, which is part of the a £26 million development close to the Manchester Ship Canal and the M60 motorway. Julien Peyrelongue (born 2 April 1981, in Bayonne) is a French rugby union fly-half, currently playing for the Pro D2 team Dax. Club career Having spent his youth years at Peyrehorade, Peyrelongue left in 2000 for Biarritz, where he spent his entire professional career. He won two French championships in 2005 and 2006 and reached the final of the Heineken Cup twice in 2006 and 2010. Danny Cipriani (; born 2 November 1987) is an English professional rugby union player currently unattached. He most recently played for Premiership Rugby side Bath and previously played for Gloucester, Sale Sharks and Wasps in the Premiership and Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby. Joe Ford (rugby Union)
Joe Ford (born 4 June 1990) is a rugby union coach. He has previously also been a player for Yorkshire Carnegie, in three other spells, as well as Northampton Saints, Sale Sharks and Leicester Tigers in Premiership Rugby. He has recently been appointed a coach at Doncaster Knights. Career Ford was a member of the Bradford Bulls Academy and played amateur rugby league for the St Albans Centurions. Try (rugby)
A try is a way of scoring points in rugby union and rugby league football. A try is scored by grounding the ball in the opposition's in-goal area (on or behind the goal line). Rugby union and league differ slightly in defining "grounding the ball" and the "in-goal" area. In rugby union a try is worth 5 points, in rugby league a try is worth 4 points. The term "try" comes from "try at goal", signifying that grounding the ball originally only gave the attacking team the opportunity to try to score with a kick at goal. A try is analogous to a touchdown in American and Canadian football, with the major difference being that a try requires the ball be simultaneously touching the ground and an attacking player, whereas a touchdown merely requires that the ball enter the end zone while in the possession of a player.
