100 Metres
The 100 metres, or 100-meter dash, is a sprint race in track and field competitions. The shortest common outdoor running distance, the dash is one of the most popular and prestigious events in the sport of athletics. It has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1928 for women. The inaugural World Championships were in 1983. The reigning 100 m Olympic or world champion is often named "the fastest man or woman in the world". Fred Kerley and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce are the reigning world champions; Marcell Jacobs and Elaine Thompson-Herah are the men's and women's Olympic champions. On an outdoor 400-metre running track, the 100 m is held on the home straight, with the start usually being set on an extension to make it a straight-line race. Vanessa Low
Vanessa Low (born 17 July 1990) is a German-born Australian Paralympic athlete competing in T42 sprint and long jump events. Born in East Germany, she gained Australian nationality in June 2017. In 2016, Low was the only actively competing female track athlete with two above-knee amputations of her legs. Despite the location of these amputations and despite her having to compete with athletes having one fully functional leg, she successfully made it to the finals of all of her sprint and long jump competitions at both the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London and the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio. In Rio she won the gold medal with a 4.93m world record distance in the T42 long jump and a silver medal in the T42 100m competition. Jana Schmidt (born 13 December 1972) is a Paralympian athlete from Germany competing mainly in category T42 track and field events. Martina Caironi
Martina Caironi (born 13 September 1989) is an Italian Paralympic athlete. She competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and 2016 Summer Paralympics. She won a gold medal in the 100 m sprint in 2012 and a silver in the long jump in 2016. She qualified for the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Biography As a result of a motorcycle accident in 2007, Caironi had to undergo high- femoral amputation on her left leg. Disqualification On 17 October 2019, she was disqualified for having been found positive for a steroid contained in a healing ointment, prescribed by her doctor, to treat a severe inflammation of the amputated leg. However, the ''Italian national anti-doping court'', recognizing the good faith of the athlete, reduced the disqualification by one year, therefore the disqualification expired on 9 March 2020. Chen Junefi (born 15 May 1992) is a Paralympian athlete from China competing mainly in T38 classification sprint events. Chen represented her country at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, where she won three medals; a gold in the 100m sprint and silvers in both the 200m sprint and the women's 4 x 100m relay (T35-38). Verônica Hipólito
Verônica Silva Hipólito (born 2 June 1996) is a para-athlete from Brazil competing mainly in category T37 sprint events. She competed as an able-bodied athlete before a stroke in 2011 left her with permanent damage to the right side of her body. In 2013, she discovered that she was eligible to compete in Paralympic sports and that year represented Brazil at the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships. Personal history Hipólito was born in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil in 1996. In 2008, she discovered that she had a brain tumour, which was removed. But in March 2011 she had a stroke that affected the movement on the right side of her body. The stroke affected the right side of her body and she lost strength in both her right leg and arm. Sophie Megan Hahn, (born 23 January 1997) is a parasport athlete from England competing mainly in T38 sprint events. In 2013, she qualified for the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships, selected for the T38 100m and 200m. She took the gold in the 100m sprint, setting a new world record. Johanna Benson
Johanna Benson (born 17 February 1990) is a Paralympian athlete from Walvis Bay, Namibia. She competes in T37 long jump and sprint events and at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London she won the women's 200 metres race in her classification. Her 200 metres success in London made her the first Paralympic gold medalist in Namibia's history. Personal history Benson was born in Walvis Bay, South West Africa (now Namibia) in 1990. At the age of five months it was noticed that the left side of her body was not developing as expected and she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
