The 2012 Roma Open was a professional tennis tournament played on clay courts. It was the eleventh edition of the tournament which was part of the 2012 ATP Challenger Tour. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness. James Ward (tennis)
James Ward (born 9 February 1987) is a British former professional tennis player. He is a Davis Cup champion and former British No. 2. He reached the quarterfinals of the 2010 Aegon International and the semifinals of the 2011 Aegon Championships as a wildcard entry. His best Grand Slam performance to date was reaching the third round of Wimbledon in 2015. In February 2009, Ward played what was then, the longest tennis match in history, lasting 6 hrs 40 mins, eventually losing to Chris Eaton. This was a play-off match to decide the Davis Cup team, but it was not sanctioned by the ATP so was not an official record, and it was broken later. Ward was part of the Great Britain team that won the Davis Cup in 2015, the nation's first success in the tournament for 79 years. Rhyne Williams
Robert Rhyne Williams (born March 22, 1991) is an American tennis player. He has not played on the ATP Tour since 2018 and is currently a tennis coach at the University of Tennessee. Williams first played on the professional circuit in 2006, but turned full-time professional in July 2011. Williams is the nephew of Mike De Palmer, former ATP pro (Top 35 in Singles, Top 20 in Doubles) who coached Boris Becker from 1994–99. He is the grandson of Mike DePalmer Sr, a coach at University of Tennessee (from 1981–94). Walter Trusendi (born 3 January 1985) is an Italian former professional tennis player and competes mainly on the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Futures, both in singles and doubles. Trusendi reached his highest ATP singles ranking of World No. 299 in August 2011, and his highest ATP doubles ranking of No. 161 in August 2011. Henri Joona Julius Laaksonen (, Swiss Standard German: ; born 31 March 1992) is a Swiss professional tennis player. Thomas Fabbiano (born 26 May 1989) is an Italian tennis player playing on the ATP Challenger Tour. On 11 September 2017, he reached his then highest ATP singles ranking of 70. Andrey Alexandrovich Kuznetsov (russian: Андре́й Алекса́ндрович Кузнецо́в, born 22 February 1991) is a Russian professional tennis player.
