2012 New Zealand Music Awards
The 2012 New Zealand Music Awards was the 47th holding of the annual ceremony featuring awards for musical recording artists based in or originating from New Zealand. Finalists for the three technical awards were announced on 3 October 2012, the date on which finalists for 16 'non-technical' categories were also revealed. The Critics Choice prize was announced on Wednesday 17 October, at the Kings Arms Tavern in Auckland. It was won by Watercolours (Chelsea Jade Metcalf). The awards ceremony took place on 1 November 2012 at Vector Arena, Auckland. The ceremony was again hosted by television presenter Shannon Ryan and comedian Ben Boyce and was broadcast live on television channel Four. The awards were dominated by Six60 with six awards, and Kimbra Kimbra Lee Johnson (born 27 March 1990), known mononymously as Kimbra, is a New Zealand singer and songwriter. Vodafone New Zealand Limited is a New Zealand telecommunications company. It was a subsidiary of the London-listed company Vodafone Plc until 31 July 2019, when its sale to a consortium comprising Infratil Limited and Brookfield Asset Management Inc. was settled. Annah Mac
Annah Mac is a New Zealand singer-songwriter, producer and musician. Her debut album, '' Little Stranger'' was released on the 5 September 2011, it was listed for seven weeks on the New Zealand Albums Top 40 Chart. The most successful single off the album was " Girl in Stilettos". The single was certified double platinum in New Zealand and was listed for 23 weeks on the New Zealand Top 40. Musical career Mac moved to Auckland at the age of 17 and signed a deal with Sony Music New Zealand in November 2009. In November 2011, Mac's single "Girl In Stilettos" was released and certified double platinum. The music video was funded by NZ On Air. The Edge is a youth-oriented New Zealand entertainment brand consisting of a national radio network, a music television channel - The Edge TV, and an entertainment website. It is owned and operated by MediaWorks New Zealand. The station was founded in Hamilton in 1994 and is now based in Auckland; it broadcasts nationwide over multiple channels. HLAH
Head Like a Hole (often shortened to HLAH to avoid copyright issues) is a rock band from Wellington, New Zealand. The group is named after the Nine Inch Nails song of the same name. History HLAH formed in Wellington, originally comprising Nigel Regan, Mark "Hiddee Beast" Hamill, Nigel "Booga" Beazley and Andrew Durno. Previous to HLAH forming Regan and Hamill played in a covers band playing songs by artists such as early Masters of Reality, Black Sabbath, Faith No More, Nirvana, Butthole Surfers, Mudhoney and Fugazi. The Checks (band)
The Checks were a New Zealand rock band known for blues-driven, high-energy rock. The group released three albums, '' Hunting Whales'', '' Alice by the Moon'' and ''Deadly Summer Sway'' and toured extensively before splitting up in 2012. History The Checks were formed in 2002 when Takapuna Grammar School friends Ed Knowles, Sven Pettersen, Karel Chabera, Jacob Moore and Callum Martin came together over a mutual love of music. The newly formed band got their first break by impressing bFM breakfast DJ Hugh Sundae, and went on to win the Auckland regional finals of the Smokefreerockquest, qualifying them for the 2003 finals. Anxiety (Ladyhawke Album)
''Anxiety'' is the second studio album by New Zealand singer Ladyhawke. It was released on 25 May 2012 by Modular Recordings. It was recorded in early 2011 with longtime collaborator Pascal Gabriel, who co-wrote all tracks on the album. "Black White & Blue" was released as the album's lead single on 24 January 2012, followed by "Sunday Drive" on 9 April 2012 and "Blue Eyes" on 16 July 2012. Background and recording Ladyhawke first revealed plans to work on a second album in a message on her official website in May 2010. She explained the four-year gap between her self-titled debut album and ''Anxiety'' by saying, "I had no idea how exhausted I'd be after I finished touring. Ladyhawke (musician)
Phillipa Margaret "Pip" Brown (born 13 July 1979), better known by her stage name Ladyhawke, is a New Zealand singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She took her stage name from Richard Donner's 1985 film '' Ladyhawke''. Brown was part of the Wellington-based band Two Lane Blacktop (2001–2003), before moving to Australia where, in 2004, she formed the art rock band Teenager with Nick Littlemore of Pnau. In 2007 she moved to London, afterwards relocating to Los Angeles around 2013, and then subsequently relocating back to her native New Zealand after the release of her third album, Wild Things. Brown's debut solo album, '' Ladyhawke'', was released on 22 September 2008 through Modular Recordings, and topped the RIANZ Albums Chart. ''Unknown Mortal Orchestra'' is the debut album by the New Zealand rock band Unknown Mortal Orchestra, released on 21 June 2011 on Fat Possum Records. The album won the 2012 Taite Music Prize. Background and recording Ruban Nielson left The Mint Chicks in the beginning of 2010, citing a loss of interest in the group's music. Following an incident during one of the band's live performances and Nielson's subsequent departure, The Mint Chicks broke up. Nielson had already returned to Portland, Oregon, where he began working at a film production company as an illustrator. He quickly found himself wanting to write and record music again and began searching for "psychedelic records with lost tunes" for inspiration. Nielson had become very specific about what type of record he wanted to find for inspiration and, with that specificity, began making that record himself instead. Unknown Mortal Orchestra (UMO) is a New Zealand psychedelic rock band formed in Auckland, primarily composed of singer, guitarist, and songwriter Ruban Nielson, and bassist Jake Portrait. The band is currently based in Portland, Oregon, United States. Nielson started the band in 2010. The band's first album was released in 2011 on Fat Possum Records; four subsequent studio albums have been released on Jagjaguwar, the most recent being '' IC-01 Hanoi'' (2018). ''Little Stranger'' is the debut studio (and only) album by New Zealand recording artist Annah Mac. It was released in New Zealand on 5 September 2011. It peaked at #32 on the RIANZ Albums chart, and at #7 on the RIANZ New Zealand Artists Albums chart.
