2012 MEAC Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament took place March 5–10, 2012 at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Norfolk State won the tournament and received an automatic bid into the 2012 NCAA tournament. The 2012 championship game was televised on ESPN2 on March 10. This was the final year in Winston-Salem, as the tournament moved to Norfolk, VA beginning in 2013. Format With Savannah State and North Carolina Central now in the MEAC as full Division I members, the MEAC will have a new format for the 2012 tournament. The top three seeds will receive a first round bye. Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum
The Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum (also known as LJVM Coliseum, Joel Coliseum or simply The Joel) is a 14,407-seat multi-purpose arena, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Construction on the arena began on April 23, 1987, and it opened on August 28, 1989. It was named after Lawrence Joel, an Army medic from Winston-Salem who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1967 for action in Vietnam on November 8, 1965. The memorial was designed by James Ford in New York, and includes the poem "The Fallen" engraved on an interior wall. It is home to the Wake Forest University Demon Deacons men's basketball and women's basketball teams, and is adjacent to the Carolina Classic Fairgrounds. 2011–12 Norfolk State Spartans Men's Basketball Team
The 2011–12 Norfolk State Spartans men's basketball team represented Norfolk State University during the 2011–12 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Spartans, led by fifth year head coach Anthony Evans, played their home games at Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall and are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 26–10, 13–3 in MEAC play to finish in second place. They were the champions of the MEAC Basketball tournament to earn the conference's automatic bid in the 2012 NCAA tournament, the school's first ever appearance in the tournament. As a 15 seed, the Spartans shocked the 2 seed Missouri in the second round, 86–84. Anthony Evans (basketball)
Anthony Lemont Evans (born March 25, 1970) is an American college basketball coach and the former head men's basketball coach at Florida International. Prior to FIU, he served as the head coach at Norfolk State University. Evans currently serves as Director of Player Development at UMass. Evans graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas College in 1994, where he had played guard for the men's basketball team. Playing career Evans played out his high school career at Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating from Loughlin, he went on to attend Orange County CC in Middletown, NY where he was a two-year stand out for the Colts during the 1989–1990 & 1990–1991 seasons. He currently is 4th on the SUNY Orange all-time scoring list with 1,182 points. Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) is a collegiate athletic conference whose full members are historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southeastern and the Mid-Atlantic United States. It participates in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I, and in football, in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Currently, the MEAC has automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason play in baseball (since 1994), men's basketball (since 1981), women's basketball (since 1982), softball (since 1995), men's and women's tennis (since 1998), and volleyball (since 1994). The 2012 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament was a single-elimination tournament involving 68 schools playing to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. The 74th edition of the tournament began on March 13, 2012, and concluded with the championship game on April 2 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. North Carolina Central University
North Carolina Central University (NCCU or NC Central) is a public historically black university in Durham, North Carolina. Founded by James E. Shepard in affiliation with the Chautauqua movement in 1909, it was supported by private funds from both Northern and Southern philanthropists. Bye (sports)
In sport, a bye is the preferential status of a player or team that is automatically advanced to the next round of a tournament, without having to play an opponent in an early round. In knockout (elimination) tournaments they can be granted either to reward the highest ranked participant(s) or assigned randomly, to make a working bracket if the number of participants is not a power of two (e.g. 16 or 32). In round-robin tournaments, usually one competitor gets a bye in each round when there are an odd number of competitors, as it is impossible for all competitors to play in the same round. 2011–12 Savannah State Tigers Basketball Team
The 2011–12 Savannah State Tigers basketball team represents Savannah State University in the 2011–12 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Their head coach is Horace Broadnax in his seventh year. The Tigers play their home games at the Tiger Arena. After previously playing as a Division I Independent, the Tigers are new members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Tigers were the 2011–12 MEAC regular season champions and received an automatic bid into the 2012 NIT, their first ever appearance in any Division I tournament as a Division I member. The team posted a 21–10 overall mark and lead the MEAC in scoring defense, only allowing 58.9 points per game and were second in the conference in scoring margin (+5.4).
