2012 European Rally Championship Season
The 2012 European Rally Championship season was the 60th season of the FIA European Rally Championship, the European continental championship series in rallying. The season consisted of eleven (twelve planned) rallies, beginning with the ''Internationale Jänner Rallye'' in Austria on 5 January 2012 and concluding with the Rallye International du Valais on 27 October 2012. After 8 rounds, Finnish driver Juho Hänninen secured the championship, winning four events. Calendar The calendar for the 2012 season featured twelve rallies, the eleven rallies from the previous season plus the '' Internationale Jänner Rallye'' in Austria. Two events were shared with the Intercontinental Rally Challenge: Ypres and Zlín. However one event, the ''Rallye d'Antibes Côte d'Azur'', withdrew from the ERC during the season. The Belgium Ypres Westhoek Rally (BYWR) founded by Frans Thévelin in 1965 is one of the most famous rallies in the European Rally Championship, the Belgian Rally Championship, the British Rally Championship, and the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. Jänner Rallye
The Jänner Rallye, also known as the Internationale Jänner Rallye, is an international rally racing event based in Freistadt in northern Austria. The event is the season opening round of the European Rally Championship, the Austrian Rally Championship and the Czech Rally Championship. Translated from German the name means ''January Rally''. The mid-winter calendar position means the rally is frequently snow-bound with the surface a mix of ice and asphalt. History First run in 1969 as the Casino Rallye, it quickly became a feature of the Austrian championship and soon joined the European championship although only in the lower co-efficient category. Achim Warmbold became the first multiple winner of the event in 1973, but Franz Wittmann, Sr. came to dominate the rally. Rally is a wide-ranging form of motorsport with various competitive motoring elements such as speed tests (often called ''rally racing),'' navigation tests, or the ability to reach waypoints or a destination at a prescribed time or average speed.
