2012 European Athletics Championships
The 2012 European Athletics Championships were held in Helsinki, Finland between 27 June and 1 July 2012. This edition marks the beginning of a new two-year cycle of the European Athletics Championships which were previously held every four years. The decision to grant the games for Helsinki was made by the European Athletics Congress on 9 November 2009. Another city that showed interest in hosting the event was Nuremberg, Germany, however Helsinki was in pole position during the whole process. This was the third time that the city had hosted the event, 1971 and 1994 being the other occasions. Fatih Avan (born 1 January 1989) is a male Turkish javelin thrower. The tall athlete at is a member of Fenerbahçe Athletics team, where he is coached by Metin Altıntaş. Career Avan participated at the 2009 Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy and won the gold medal with a personal best throw of 79.78 m. At the 9th European Winter Throwing Cup held on 14 March 2009 in Los Realejos on Tenerife, Spain, he ranked third throwing the javelin 74.82 m. Avan is broke the Turkish record with a mark of 77.15 m in June 2009 in Bursa. He represented Turkey at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics, but did not make it past the qualifying round. Thomas Röhler (born 30 September 1991) is a German track and field athlete who competes in the javelin throw. He is the Athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's javelin throw, 2016 Olympic Champion and 2018 European Athletics Championships – Men's javelin throw, 2018 European Champion. Tero Kristian Pitkämäki (born 19 December 1982) is a Finnish retired track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. He is a World Champion, having won gold in 2007. His personal best throw of 91.53 m, set in 2005, ranks him eleventh on the overall list. Early life Pitkämäki was born on 19 December 1982. He is from the rural village of Ahonkylä in Ilmajoki.
