Southend-on-Sea (), commonly referred to as Southend (), is a coastal city and unitary authority area with borough status in southeastern Essex, England. It lies on the north side of the Thames Estuary, east of central London. It is bordered to the north by Rochford and to the west by Castle Point. It is home to the longest pleasure pier in the world, Southend Pier. London Southend Airport is located north of the city centre. Southend-on-Sea originally consisted of a few poor fishermen's huts and farms at the southern end of the village of Prittlewell. Peter Gilbert
Eric Peter Gilbert (born 31 July 1983), known as Peter Gilbert, is a Welsh former footballer and current coach. A defender, Gilbert played in the Football League for Plymouth Argyle, Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster Rovers, Oldham Athletic, Northampton Town and Southend United, also appearing in the Conference for Lincoln City and briefly in the Northern Premier League for Goole. He represented Wales at under-21 level. Gilbert is currently coaching Aston Villa Under-21s. Jean-Paul Kalala
Jean-Paul Kamudimba Kalala (born 16 February 1982), also known as JP Kalala, is a Congolese former professional footballer who played as a midfielder from 1999 to 2012. He started his career in France playing for Nice before moving to Grimsby Town in 2005. Whilst with Grimsby he is notably remembered for scoring the winning goal in injury time in a League Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur. He later went on to play for Yeovil Town and Oldham Athletic before moving back to Grimsby on loan in 2008. He re-joined Yeovil for a second spell in 2009 and went on to play for Bristol Rovers and Southend United. He earned seven caps for the DR Congo national team. Ryan Ian Leonard (born 24 May 1992) is an English professional footballer who plays as a defender or midfielder for Millwall. A midfielder, he graduated through the Plymouth Argyle Academy to make his senior debut in March 2010, following which he spent time on loan at Weston-super-Mare of the League South and Tiverton Town of the Southern Football League. Daniel Ian Bentley (born 13 July 1993) is an English professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for club Wolverhampton Wanderers. He has played in the English Football League for Southend United, Brentford and Bristol City. Career Southend United Bentley was born in Basildon, Essex and began his career as a centre back with hometown club Hutton Medway. A one-off appearance as a goalkeeper was witnessed by an Arsenal scout, who brought Bentley to the club's academy at age eight. Luke Prosser
Luke Barrie Prosser (born 28 May 1988) is an English professional footballer who last played as a defender for Stevenage. A product of the Tottenham Hotspur youth academy, Prosser joined Port Vale in 2005. He spent five years at the club, also spending time on loan at Leigh RMI, Salisbury City, and Kidderminster Harriers. He moved on to Southend United in 2010, and was initially loaned out to Rushden & Diamonds. He played for Southend in the 2013 Football League Trophy Final and was an unused substitute in the 2015 League Two play-off final victory. Mark Ian Phillips (born 27 January 1982, Lambeth) is a retired professional footballer who played in the Football League for Southend United, Millwall, Brentford, Darlington and AFC Wimbledon as a defender. Career Phillips was signed as a youth player for Millwall at age 13 and first appeared with the senior team in September 2001. He suffered from frequent injuries and notched up just 67 league appearances during his seven years at Millwall, scoring once against Sheffield United. He was released at the end of the 2007–08 season. David John Martin (born 3 June 1985) is an English footballer who plays as a left winger for Burgess Hill Town. Lee Thomas Sawyer (born 10 September 1989) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Saffron Walden Town. A graduate of the Chelsea F.C. academy, he never made a first-team appearance for Chelsea, and, after leaving the Blues, has spent most of his career in non-league football. Barry Corr (born 2 April 1985) is an Irish former professional football striker and currently first team coach at Cambridge United. Club career Early career Corr started his career at St. Anthony's, Kilcoole before moving to Leeds United. After four years at Leeds he moved to Sheffield Wednesday. Neil Harris (born 12 July 1977) is an English professional football manager and former footballer who played as a striker. He is currently manager of League Two side Gillingham. Harris is Millwall's all-time record goalscorer, with 138 goals in all competitions.
